Continued reading through this series.

Not much though about them as they don‘t have much going on but they keep my attention in the moment and they don‘t take long to get through.

The drama club puts on Splendor In The Grass; Jessica stars opposite Bill Chase, using his crush on her to get him to do her bidding. She notices DeeDee Gordon‘s crush on Bill & intervenes. Bill continues giving DeeDee surfing lessons. DeeDee‘s father, a Hollywood agent, watches a rehearsal & says that he spied screenworthy talent. Certain it‘s her, Jessica magnanimously steps aside for DeeDee & Bill— until the screentest turns out to be for Bill!

First, this is a YA story. Characters are 17-18. So naturally they will behave like how normal teenagers would. They are childish, selfish, cringy, annoying & irritating to adults. So if you get easily annoyed by teenagers or teen characters, don't read it. You'll find it boring and frustrating & I don't want these tags to be associated with this beautiful & bittersweet story.

hya First we get to know about a particular incident that happened in MCs life when they were 10 & then we got to know them 1 month before completing their high school.
I think I needed this story at this point of time in my life. It made me remember my adventures, my somewhat reckless life. But most importantly, it made me remember my friends, my memories with them, my fights, my bond. This story is about the bond despite there being differences or disagreements. Our different characteristics & how, when we are together, we are whole.

hya This story is also about how our imagination of someone is far from that of someone's reality. We can understand each other but can never be each other. But by only imagining being someone else, or the world being something else, is the only way light gets in. It's the machine that kills fascists. 3w
hya This story played with my strings, their importance & how careful we have to be while choosing our metaphors, because they have implications. It's how we see ourselves & how we let the world see us. 3w
hya I didn't cry at the end but it sure made me think, about our roots, our values, our aspirations, love & letting go. People often take love & letting go in opposite senses. But when you understand them & you understand yourself, in my POV, that's the only thing that matters. 3w

This book was so, so good. I was completely captivated. It‘s one of those books that makes your inner child sit up and say, “I knew I was right!” I‘m so bummed that the other two aren‘t on kindle or at my library.

I don't know how I first learned about this 1986 YA novel by NZ author Margaret Mahy but it's been on my Goodreads TBR since 2016.
And it's fantastic!
Middle daughter Harry (real name Ariadne) is a quiet bookish middle daughter in a bustling family. At their summer house for Xmas holidays, three young men crash the party. And it's unclear who or what they are. Did Harry conjure them through her writing?
The story is weird & complex 👇

merelybookish And not altogether clear. It doesn't provide easy answers to the reader. There is a plot development at the end that feels icky by today's standards but otherwise I loved this. Loved how it is messy and strange. It's one of those books I wish I could have read when I was 15. 3w
merelybookish Been thinking of you @Centique while reading this book and wondering about Mahy's reputation in NZ. And then went to a fringe festival show last night called A Complete Idiot's Guide to New Zealand. So lots of 🥝 content for me this week! 😀 3w

Centique Wow - you really are deep into the NZ culture! Mahy is HUGELY famous in NZ as a childrens book writer. She died 13 years ago but she was always on TV news and things because she was visiting schools and involved in performances and shows. She was a big personality. But people often didnt know she wrote YA books too. I remembered loving this one as well 3w
