As I watched the documentary on Netflix about the Red Sox first World Series win in 86 years I was reminded of the columns that Bill Simmons was writing at the time. He always brought goosebumps and tears as he and his dad sat through years of losses and finally a victory. I decided to look for old columns and found he had put them in a book! $5 was all it took to purchase it. This will be a slow read over months. The other benefit of i🔽

Suet624 This book is that it reminds me that even through years of devastating losses, things can turn around. It will offer me some hope that at some point we can move this country forward toward a place of compassion, fairness, and, perhaps most importantly, to democracy. I should add of course that Simmons often makes me laugh which is super helpful right now. (edited) 2mo
Jeg Lovely to read your comment. I too hold that hope for your country and the world. ❤️🤞 2mo

TheBookHippie I‘m a CUBS fan. I get it. And the arc of justice is looooong. But regimes never last forever. We must however. 2mo
Suet624 @TheBookHippie congrats on the Cubs win! Long overdue. Love your sentiments. 2mo
Bookwormjillk That‘s right. The future isn‘t written yet. He makes me laugh too. I used to love his podcast when he would call his friend Jack at work and talk bad about the Yankees. 2mo
Bookwormjillk Also thought the documentary was well done. I might watch it again. 2mo
Suet624 @Bookwormjillk I thought the doc was good too. I think it could have gone to 4 episodes outlining just how brutal that playoff series with the Yankees was. How cold, how late at night, just how stressful those games were. More fan comments would have been good too. I‘ll definitely watch again. 😊 and Simmons and Jack! So good. 2mo
Megabooks Thank you for sharing this. I hope things turn around in time. There is dark before the most beautiful dawns. 2mo
Suet624 @Megabooks May it come to pass sooner rather than later. 😊💕 2mo
sarahbarnes Thanks for this ♥️♥️ 2mo
Suet624 @sarahbarnes I hope are doing okay. 💕 2mo
sarahbarnes Thanks, Sue. I hope you are, too. Lots of work ahead of us. 2mo

While a naturally enjoyable tale of the breaking of one of the sports world's longest-standing curses, I ultimately found this one hard to get through. This was thanks, in large part, to the proliferation of - pardon the pun - inside baseball that ran rampant through the pages. The frequent use of jargon made the action difficult to follow. Despite this, King and O'Nan are engaging writers, and their disbelief and eventual joy are palpable. 4/5

This weird winter weather has me counting down the hours until opening day. I decided re-listening to this fan diary from the 2004 season would help. It was a fun walk down memory lane.

Cinfhen Such an interesting author pairing😉 2y
MaureenMc As a lifelong Cardinals fan, I want you to know how hard it was for me to “❤️” this post. 😆 2y

New episode is up over on Patreon! We talk about the fixing of the 1919 World Series, gambling, gangsters, and dumb decisions.

There are many benefits to becoming a patron, including access to extra episodes and book reviews. However, new patrons will also receive bookmarks, t-shirts, and coffee mugs!

PS, the decapitated duck isn't meant to be artsy or symbolic. A two year old threw it against the wall.

We're back with the classic baseball book, Eight Men Out. The casual baseball fan is probably familiar with the 1919 Black Sox scandal but doesn't know all the details.
We discuss the events of the book as well as today's mix of gambling and sports and how things have changed and stayed the same. Enjoy!

Catching up on #Scarathlon2022 #PhotoPrompt - my selection for curse, or reversing the curse in this case. October 2004 was one to remember for Red Sox fans!

“By not mentioning when characters are white, reviews perpetuate the White Default, thereby supporting the systemic injustice of white dominance.”

rockpools That‘s quite challenging! I‘ve been browsing through Kirkus‘s children‘s reviews to see how it works. 5y
Lindy @RachelO I agree that it‘s challenging. Seeing how it‘s done in Kirkus is a good idea. 👍 5y
LibrarianRyan I love this idea. I will have to try to be more active about using it. 5y

KVanRead Wow. Thanks for sharing this. Can‘t believe I‘d never thought about the White default and its impact - clearly my own white privilege there. I will from now on. (edited) 5y
Lindy @LibrarianRyan Excellent! 😊 5y
LibrarianRyan The other thing i have been noticing and am going to try to be more aware of especially in picture books is when a character is POC but the author/Illustrator is not. 5y
Lindy @KVanRead I will try to indicate ethnicity in my reviews from now on too. 👍 5y
Lindy @LibrarianRyan Yes, good idea. That‘s important too. 5y
