absolutebookish Beasts Made of Night by Tochi Onyebuchi is the first one that comes to mind. It doesn't release until October, so I won't say which character(s) struggle with illiteracy...because spoilers. But it did factor into some important parts of the story. By the way, love the post! 💛💛💛 7y
Yawednesdays @absolutebookish thanks for this!! I have the ARC and will definitely check it out! 7y

Mehso-so

Whether someone will enjoy Timekeeper depends on how willing the reader is to accept "instalove." Danny's relationship with the clock spirit Colton is essentially a clever, steampunk reimagining of Rapunzel. That this story is built around a homosexual relationship is refreshing, but Colton is little more than rescue-bait, which disappointed me a bit. The best part of the book is the world building, & I wish Timekeeper explored more of that world.

Sadly, I can tell I'm starting to sour on Timekeeper. Really wish I wasn't. Perhaps one of my favorite things in the book is the bits of mythology about this world. There's so much potential for exploring this world, but the story doesn't allow the reader to really travel to all those places. I also wish the book did more with Cassie and Daphne, because they are the most interesting characters, by far. #Timekeeper #TaraSim #Steampunk

BillBlume @Erinxx90 was definitely one of the best things about the book. Having read a blurb about the sequel, not sure I'm likely to stay with the series, though. Some great worldbuilding in this book, though. 8y
Erinxx90 @BillBlume I'm definitely interested in this read. 8y

I'm a little mixed about the clock spirit Colton's behavior in these past few chapters. On the one hand, Danny did fail to keep his word to visit, but Colton is essentially using self harm as a means to get Danny's attention. Hoping this will be the last of that in the story. Danny calls him out for it, but Colton also gets what he wants, essentially rewarding the behavior. #Steampunk #Timekeeper #TaraSim #ToxicRelationship? #HopeNot

BillBlume Equally disturbing is that these clock spirits seem more like slave labor in how they're used to make the clocks function. They are essentially prisoners in their own bodies. 8y

Tara Sim shows a good sense of pacing. Having just finished reading chapter three, I was thinking that while she'd done well to avoid an info dump to explain the mechanics of her complex setting, I was ready for more details about what makes this world tick (forgive the pun). As this chapter mentions Big Ben, I decided to share a picture I took of the London clock tower in 2010. #Timekeeper #TaraSim #BigBen #London #YA #Steampunk #youngadult

"...he wondered if this was what Atlas would have felt had the world rested on his sternum rather than his shoulder."

Started reading Timekeeper tonight, and liking it so far. This line from the first chapter jumped out at me. Looking forward to seeing where the story goes next. #Timekeeper #TaraSim #YA #Steampunk #YALit #youngadult #WNDB #WeNeedDiverseBooks #youngadultbooks
