#readingoceania2024 #solomonislands A bit of a cheat as this is a book that largely takes place in the UK and the WWI trenches in France. However, the reminiscences of an anthropological journey to the Solomon Islands gives the book a broader view of humanity‘s relationship to death. Excellent book.

Librarybelle That works! Wonderful! 4d

Reading for #ReadingOceania2024 by the fire tonight. It‘s good to get outside a bit.

Texreader This is an excellent book!

Looks so cozy. Too warm here for being outside!

Bookwormjillk @Texreader I really like it so far. Have you read any of the others in the series? 2mo

Ben Kella is the aofia (the leader) of his people in the #SolomonIslands and a police sergeant working for the Brits as they are slowing turning the Islands over to independence. Sister Conchita is the new nun posted to his island, some of whose people are Catholic but many remain true to their mystical roots. A series of murders and other illegal activities lead the sergeant and the nun on the hunt to unravel this complex web and do their ⬇️

Texreader best to stay alive. It is a complex plot, with likeable main characters, and extremely well-written. I didn‘t mean to start out reading a series, but I will absolutely read the next two in it. #readingOceania #serieslove2024 8mo

I feel so fortunate. I have a few hours to read tonight with my reading buddy. I‘m about to finish the tagged ebook, then I‘ll pick up my IRL book again, Beasts of a Little Land. 😌

How are you spending your Sunday evening?

Hmmm. We humans are “long pigs.” Quite a history of cannibalism in Oceania.

This is such a tiny little volume that I almost feel like I cheated, but it does contain #ownvoices poetry from the #SolomonIslands. Is it good poetry? I don‘t really know, as I‘m not a poetry reader, but it‘s interesting and gave me a little flavor of what people from there might think about. There are also 2 poems in both pidgin and English, which I really liked.

Librarybelle I don‘t read a lot of poetry either, but this one sounds very interesting with the look at the thoughts of residents. 11mo
squirrelbrain Have you nearly finished this challenge already?! 🤣 11mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain Ha! Not even close! But since I don‘t know if we‘ll suddenly get an offer and be moving in a month or two, I want to take advantage of having all the Oceania books at this library system. I won‘t have this kind of access in Oregon! So yeah, I‘m definitely pushing hard on this challenge. 11mo
squirrelbrain Ah yes, good thinking! And I‘m glad you‘re still there so that I got two books too, they‘re really not that easy to find over here. 11mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain I thought that might be the case! I‘m really lucky that the library here is so good. The whole state is connected within the system, so most of the books I‘ll be using for this challenge will be from Honolulu. And they just send them over from another island, no fee! It‘s amazing. 11mo

Bailedbailed

I bailed. Bother.

I think if I‘d read this all in one gulp, it would have been fine. I loved the Solomon Islands setting and learning a little about the cultures there. It‘s a potentially fun not-quite-cosy, with a local policeman/traditional peace-keeper and an English nun.

But I never particularly warmed to the main characters and, having set it aside for a few weeks, I found I wasn‘t that fussed about the story. Ho hum. Moving on…

Cathythoughts Oh dear ! Moving on sounds like a good move 😁 2y
squirrelbrain Meh…oh well. I‘m sure you‘ve plenty of other books on the go! 😁 2y
Centique Sometimes bailing makes all the difference to your flow - like a stumbling block removed. I support this decision!! 2y
