Freedom can be a scary thing when you‘ve been hidden for most of your life, like the 3rd born children who had no liberties since the government restricted families from having more than 2 kids. In this conclusion to the Shadow Children series, Luke inadvertently starts a rebellion which leads to government overthrow and the exposure of a decade of hunger, loss, pain, torture and death…

In the 6th book of the Shadow Children series, the Niedler School is raided, and Matthias, Percy, and Alia (third-born kids) are taken prisoner by the Population Police. Constantly under scrutiny, the kids fight daily to survive; but how much can they do when they‘re seriously outnumbered??

Book 3. Nina has been betrayed by the boy she loved, and arrested by the Population Police for exposing other alleged third children. She‘s innocent but also has to pretend to not be a 3rd child, while trying to save other 3rd kids. Trust no one 😳

I‘m on Book 2 of 7. In a world where families are allowed no more than 2 children, there are still plenty of families who have 3. The penalty of the 3rd child (even if he/she is part of a multiple birth) is death. Hidden kids are everywhere assuming other identities…

Interesting young adult book. I enjoyed it because it wasn‘t long and drawn out.

Since the earliest days of my book podcast, I‘ve been hearing requests for an episode about Margaret Peterson Haddix‘s AMONG THE HIDDEN. Today, you get it! Author Claire Ahn joins me on Episode 273 for a thoughtful conversation about this first book in the Shadow Children series and the many eerie ways in which it still feels relevant today. 🖤 listen at the link in my bio!

Population laws are in effect, families are not supposed to have more than two children, and the ‘illegal‘ third (and fourth) siblings become the hidden. I don‘t know if I‘ll teach this one or not, but it would make a great choice for a Lit Circle option.

In a future where the Population Police enforce the law limiting a family to only two children, Luke, an illegal third child, has lived all his twelve years in isolation and fear on his family's farm in this start to the Shadow Children series from Margaret Peterson Haddix.Luke has never been to school. He's never had a birthday party, or gone to a friend's house for an overnight. In fact, Luke has never had a friend. Luke is one of the shadow
