pick4.5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨. Good world-building and an engaging read that was better than I expected it to be. While elements were predictable, it was a true page-turner and I was fully taken with the Grishaverse and its characters. I look forward to reading more of the series. 🦌

so-soWhile there were several elements I liked in the middle of the novel, the imagery & detailed descriptions were the novel‘s strengths. The novel began & ended slowly, dragging more than it should have. The constant shifts in time, place, & narrative POV (the second person was entirely unnecessary) made it difficult to connect some pieces & to create a cohesive timeline, especially before characters were established.

so-soFrequent narrator changes are annoying and I must have reread the first 50 pages 3 times just to figure out the main characters and why I should care. It was maddening how long it took interesting threads to pay out on clues.
The troubled youth reveal and why some make deadly decisions was timely, though this story doesn't shed any additional light on the problem and makes the motives sound even more selfish and sinister. #RebelliousReaders
