One day every adult on Earth gets a box with a string inside that indicates their life span. Are these boxes #blessings or curses? It‘s hard to say! I think my book club will have lots to discuss.

@CSeydel I started this on audio today and can already tell that it will affect me deeply. As a former hospice nurse, I‘m very aware of unnecessary and often more painful medical interventions that hurt rather than help. There is such a thing as a “good” death, one that allows quality of life in those last days/months rather than quantity. #ALSpine25 @monalyisha

CSeydel Oh wow I didn‘t know you were a hospice nurse! You will no doubt already have thought a lot about the issues he brings up, which I had not. Still, he is an excellent writer, and the book is quite powerful. 1w
CBee @CSeydel so far I‘m pretty blown away, and his writing is excellent. Great narrator on the audio too, which helps! I won‘t finish it quickly but will listen to it throughout the month 😊 1w
DogMomIrene I didn‘t know you were a hospice nurse. My husband was a hospice nurse for a couple of years back in the States. Definitely his favorite nursing job because he did learn, and shared with me, that a good death does exist. We‘ve got a small pile of books on death. Will need to check that this one is there. 1w

CBee @DogMomIrene it was my favorite too, if I‘m being honest. Strange to say but it was so rewarding and I felt honored to be with my patients in their last days ♥️ 1w
DogMomIrene @CBee That‘s exactly how Matthew felt. It‘s not a nursing position for everyone, but when a person fits, you know. 1w
CBee @DogMomIrene is he still a nurse? I left years ago but love hearing about other‘s experiences! 1w
DogMomIrene @CBee He‘s retired. He and our pup Bernie just got certified as a therapy dog team. They had their first visit at the hospital with a patient recovering from burns. And he‘s looking at visiting the palliative care home here, which is like a hospice house in the States. So he‘s retired, but finding ways to make a difference for patients. 1w
CBee @DogMomIrene wow, that‘s so lovely ♥️♥️ 1w

“That the beginning and the end may have been chosen for us, the string already spun, but the middle had always been left undetermined, to be woven and shaped by us.”

I really loved the premise of this book. It captured my interest right away and held it all the way through. I think maybe there were too many characters and it was a lot to keep track of all the different stories. But, I loved the concept and the way it was written. I think this could definitely be a really cool movie if they adapted it. Definitely a thought provoking and interesting book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My September #doublespin and Book Club pick for October. Felt good to read a book that I wanted to keep coming back to. I think our group‘s discussion will be a good one.

I still remember the first time I was around a grieving acquaintance and found myself with lack of words. Then as a healthcare worker, I was witness to the awful quality of life patients face in hospice or certain places for assisted living. This book was so needed in the field, not only for providers to approach the difficult situation but also to offer to patients the autonomy to make the best decision for themselves at the end of their lives.

Not a “comfort” read, but SO important. Should be required reading for anyone who won‘t remain young nor live forever (yes, every one of us).

451Degrees Loved this one so much. A reread will soon be in order myself! 3mo
Readerann @451Degrees Yes, it‘s one I definitely will be revisiting as well. 3mo

This was an interesting concept for a book. It made me think about life and living and it has some great discussion topics for a book club. My big question is what happens with life insurance after the strings are released? If you have a short one, can you sign up for insurance knowing you don‘t have long to live and how does insurance companies respond. That‘s my big question.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I wondered the same! 4mo
Cortg @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘m so glad I wasn‘t the only one! 😂 4mo
