The Sense of an Ending | Julian Barnes
post image
Pickpick

Wait, WHAT?!? Send help!!! That ending!!!! Oh God, so many theories....is that the point of this slim book about memory, perception, stories/lies we tell ourselves. Do we ever know the whole story?! Tony, the narrator is recalling a certain time in his life (part 1) In part 2, past events effect present day, but can Tony‘s truth be accepted as actual truth. Does the film leave you with the same sense of uncertainty?!?

TrishB Love your review 👍🏻❤️ 5y

KarenUK Loved both the book and movie💕.... though can‘t remember the specifics... I think the movie ties things up a bit neater! 5y
Cinfhen I‘m sending u the book so we can discuss!!!!! @TrishB it‘s like 170 pages so basically u could read it over lunch 5y
Cinfhen @KarenUK we will discuss book at our next #MiamiMeetUp 5y
Cinfhen So brush up on the details @KarenUK 😂😂😘 5y
TrishB 😂😂 thank you 👍🏻 that‘s really not a book, it‘s an extended essay! 5y
Cinfhen Agreed! For you it‘s chapter one @TrishB xx 5y
TrishB I‘ve just had a set of committee papers that come in at 1021 pages 😁😁 the joy of reading, not... 5y
krismlars Ooooh I didn't know there's a movie! I know I loved the book, but honestly can't remember what happened. That's the problem with reading so many books, I don't retain much. Either that, or I'm getting older and my memory isn't what it used to be. I want it to be the first thing😂 5y
Cinfhen @KarenUK @krismlars The book ends with the revelation that a boy named Adrian ( same name as Tony‘s friend who killed himself) is living in a group home for adults with disabilities. It‘s insinuated that he is the brother of Valarie, who both Tony & Adrian had sex with and both may have had sex with Valerie‘s mom, Sarah. Which means Tony or Adrian is likely the dad & perhaps Sarah or Valerie is the mom. Does that sound familiar?!? 5y
krismlars @Cinfhen I'm going to watch the movie ASAP! 5y
Cinfhen Maybe I should watch movie too @krismlars 5y
CarolynM I loved both the book and the film. Julian Barnes is a fabulous writer. My memory is the film is pretty faithful to the book. 5y
KarenUK @Cinfhen I think I have selective amnesia! 😂😂I‘m going to watch the movie as homework before we meet! 😊👍💕 5y
Cinfhen Did you read my spoiler tag @CarolynM What do u think happened??!?!!? 5y
Centique @Cinfhen I remember reading this and being confused as to what happened as well. I think my thought was that the first Adrian had figured out this big secret and that one of his friends was the dad. It was a long time ago so I need to watch the movie too! 5y
Cinfhen So you think Tony is the dad @Centique but do you think Valerie‘s mom is the mother of Adrian jr?! Which would mean Tony slept with his girlfriends mom!?!!! 5y
Centique @Cinfhen I think that was my take - but its been a while! 5y
CarolynM Yes, I did think Tony slept with the mother 5y
BooksForEmpathy @Cinfhen Crazy ending and I had to look it up to be sure. Tony starts the “chain of events” that lead to Adrian meeting Veronica, then the letter is sent telling Adrian to consult the mother, then Adrian and Sarah have an affair and a baby, and this leads to his suicide. Would love to talk more about it!! 5y
Suet624 I haven‘t read the book but I felt the same way at the end of the movie - wait, what??? 5y
