A Fine and Pleasant Misery | Patrick F. McManus

Pickpick

If you were to ask me who the most influential authors were to me growing up, I think McManus would have to be pretty high on the list. I can remember reading his books when I was only 8 or 9 and not understanding half of it but loving the half that made sense!! A collection of articles originally published in Outdoor Life during McManus's tenure as a columnist there, these are anecdotal takes about hunting, fishing, camping, growing up poor, ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) and more, with every page full of his dry humor. Out of this collection I especially loved the chapter “The Theory and Application of Old Men“ (“If you're a kid, what you need is someone who can take you out hunting or fishing or just poking around in the woods anytime you feel the urge. That's an old man.“), “Grogan's War Surplus“ (“The machete was needed anytime you needed to slash out your own trail. This necessity arose more often ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) than a person who is not a kid with a machete might think.“) and of course “The Great Cow Plot“ because no one understands how inherently evil cows actually are better than Patrick McManus (and I say this as someone who has worked with cows for many a year haha)

These little snippets of humor were just what I needed over the weekend. If you disagree with hunting and fishing, he probably isn't the author for you, but there is still a lot⬇

Quite entertaining 😄 I was intrigued by the title & blurbs: “high class humor” & “immortalizing the ridiculous”, but I was unfamiliar with the book & author. Patrick McManus was a writer of outdoorsy humor & a frequent contributor of pieces to periodicals. This book is a collection of stories about his misadventures - hunting (including grasshoppers), fishing, etc with friends. Fun as bedtime reading, but LOLing isn‘t good for winding down 😆

MaureenMc My brother loves this author. 😊 2y
mabell @MaureenMc I will definitely keep my eye out for others by him! 😄 2y

McManus used to write articles for magazines like Outdoor Life, and most of his books are collections of those articles, about hunting, fishing, and growing up in the sticks of Idaho. My dad loves McManus, and I have been gleaning life-lessons from his writing all my life. Like most collections, some of these shorts were stronger than others, but everyone one of them made me laugh at least once.

Crazeedi My hubby would love this book, I must get it for him! 5y
ljuliel I need to read one of his books. They sound interesting. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Crazeedi @ljuliel - it's a certain kind of humor that isn't for everyone, but my family has always found him to be hilarious. It's been a long time since I've read all his books, so I can't say for sure which one is the best place to start, although I will say that his article on Sequences, found in The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw, is a foundational philosophy in my family. :-D ⬇ 5y
TheAromaofBooks “What Hank seemed never able to grasp was that on a farm you simply don't go out and do a piece of work. No, the first thing you do is determine the lengthy sequence of activities necessary even to begin the job. Then you realize that the sequence of preparatory activities is so long you will never get to the intended task. So you go fishing instead.“ 5y
Crazeedi @TheAromaofBooks you just made me bust up laughing!! That is exactly the philosophy on this farm!!!😉😂😂 5y

Here's my #weeklyforecast - eclectic as usual! Currently enjoying the tagged book, which I haven't read in years. Swiss Family Robinson is an #lmpbc read for #GroupC so I am looking forward to it.
