I Have a Dream | Martin Luther King

Pickpick

I mean, what do you say about what is arguably THE most famous speech in history? I appreciated Gorman's perspective provided in the forward, the significance to her and the role it played in her poetry reading. I feel like there's a point of view gained by reading the actual content of the speech that you cannot have just knowing that it exists and what it is about. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? I haven't looked into the art of speech making any more than studying a bit of ancient Greek rhetoric and philosophy years ago would provide, but I feel like the balance between poeticism in phrasing, moments that are powerful and eminently quotable, alongside elucidating the core purpose that you wish to communicate, make for a great speech, and it's obvious this is a prime example of that balance. 1w
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 Is it a little depressing reading it in 2024 and recognizing the dream isn't yet realized? Yes. But King spoke to galvanize people into making change, and in that sense, the speech is still as useful and powerful as it ever was. 1w
Suet624 I think everyone should read that speech. 1w

I Have a Dream | Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This is a biography about Martin Luther and his I have a Dream speech. He was an African American public speaker who spoke about a better future for his people. He talked about how one day they would get treated as real people instead of overlooked. He lead many group riot walks through the streets to make his presence known and know that he was not going to stop until his people were heard. He knew everyone was different and that made us unique.

It seems that Martin
the sparkling-eyed child born
leader of his people
was put here to do
just that.

This would be a good book to read from during a unit on Martin Luther King Jr. and his impact on civil rights. The poems provide a road map for his life and career, but are more of a jumping off point then a lesson. Having this book available in your classroom library for students to read would be perfect.

This beautiful book is an anthology style poetry book containing poems for and about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. the poems read at different paces, going from fast, quick sections to slower more dramatic ones by going from short rhymes to multi-syllabic, multiple word lines. The poems build on one another, but work just as well individually, making this a relaxing, but thought provoking and heart wrenching read.

3 ⭐This book seems more like little vignettes to join 2 people together than it does a proper story. The information is interesting, but that is about it. This book could have been done better.

#JanuaryJazz Day 18: #MLKDay While not a biography per se, visual allusions to this can be seen on each page. It is more a gentle encouragement to young readers on how they can also become a king, fashioned after Dr. King‘s dream and life‘s mission. My full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-n1j

Eggs Beautiful ❤️ 1y
