#octoberwrapup

A big month for me - admittedly I snuck Snap in on the 1st of Nov but that finally allowed me to sign off on my #manbooker2018 reading! That was a long and somewhat painful project:) Slowly chipping away on #Readharder2018 with 5 books to go and two months to do it in.
Stand Out Reads - The Long Take and Milkman ( mainly because I thought I would hate both ...)

Emilymdxn Great selection! I agree that long take and milkman were breathtakingly good! 6y
ClairesReads Awesome month for you. Would you believe that I ordered The Great Believers on the 16th and it only dispatched today! I‘m looking forward to catch up with you about that, and Crazy Rich Asians soon! 6y

⭐️

Thee worst reading experience of the year and not just because it ended up on the Man Booker. Under any circumstances this is terrible. I can think of dozens of better plotted and well written crime. I found this oddly stilted and offensive in numerous ways

A most baffling experience

Redheadrambles And that completes my 13/13 #manbooker2018 extravaganza ( first time I have ever read them all and it may well be the last ! ) 6y
Emilymdxn I totally agreed! Wtf was this book? I tried so hard to be open minded about it but it was just bizarre. ‘I‘m pregnant therefore stupid and don‘t want to make a fuss about this possible murderer‘. Not quite the worst book I‘ve read this year but close 6y
Redheadrambles @Emilymdxn I totally agree - I know some people say they thought it was ok and that maybe I was judging it with my Booker hat on but anyway I looked at it it was truly terrible. The number of times she referred to this “ whale like pregnant woman” and how basically useless she was plus the female cop that was there to serve coffee - I tried thinking it was a spoof of a bad novel but I think it‘s just a bad novel 6y
Emilymdxn I started it thinking I‘d enjoy it cause even if some people thought thrillers weren‘t Booker-y, I LIKE thrillers, but this was noooot Gone Girl. People just had no motivation for doing anything? The ending was so obvious. I was so in favour of more genres being included but this was just a terrible book 6y
Redheadrambles @Emilymdxn yep ! Literally any big name recent crime novel I can think of would put this to same - Gone Girl / Girl on a Train / Girl in a window / Girl in a cabin ANYTHING. I honestly don‘t get the plotting here - someone likes expensive knives and Snaps ? That is what I got out of it anyway... I so wanted to hurl this out my window many times 😀 6y

⭐️⭐️

To engage with any graphic novel then I need to be 100% hooked with the visuals. In this case my eye would rather be anywhere else but scanning these panels of flat, grey monotony ( every possible drab tone is here - putty, puce, khaki, a grey raspberry I don't have a name for)
There are interesting points here on social isolation and media-fueled conspiracy theories, but in general this book did not resonate with me.

The one I didn‘t read... winner #manbooker2018

Redwritinghood My least favorite of the shortlist. Oh well. 6y
Reviewsbylola Of course. 😆😆 6y
emilyhaldi Lol 😂 did you bail? Or not even attempt? 6y

BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi I read so many mixed reviews here despite its gorgeous cover that I didn‘t even attempt. Maybe I will now, one day 😀! 6y
Cinfhen It is such a stunning cover but inside was another story @BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi I only attempted to read a sample chapter & I bailed!!!! Oh well.... maybe one day when it‘s a #KindleDeal I‘ll try again! I still haven‘t read 6y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I didn‘t like that one either. Most years the winner is one of my least favorites 🤣 6y
Cinfhen I generally do not love the Man Booker winners 🤷‍♀️ 6y
emilyhaldi Lincoln in the Bardo was a real miss for me too @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB Still may try Milkman though just to see what all the fuss is about. 6y
Kalalalatja I‘m so disappointed, and kinda surprised to be honest. And if you ever do try it @BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi @Cinfhen please, please: #borrowNOTbuy! 6y
Cinfhen I‘ll heed the warning @Kalalalatja xx 6y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja I already did 🙈 6y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB well, at least the cover is pretty 😅 6y
emilyhaldi Well noted!!! ☝🏻 @Kalalalatja 6y

Idk if my fave will win, but I DO want to take Man Booker Eve to say thank you to this book that transformed my commitment to the environment and conservation. I really think it‘s changed my life. I‘m grateful to the whole Booker list for introducing me to all these thoughtful novels that I read slowly, discussed with so many people, and made me consider so much and feel like a part of something global when we all discussed them. #manbooker2018

JamieArc Do you know when they announce it? The website says October 16, so do they announce it in the evening??? I was hoping to wake up today and find out! 6y
Emilymdxn @JamieArc I know they announce it at a dinner so probably dinner time in the UK?? Maybe 8pm or so? That‘s a guess tho! 6y
BarbaraBB I was looking for a time schedule as well. I‘m voting for The Long Take but do think your fave has a bigger chance to take it away! 😘 (edited) 6y
Emilymdxn @BarbaraBB I think I‘d be happy for a lot of them to win - so many of them were just stormingly good books. The mars room is probably the only one I couldn‘t be convinced deserves to win (still not a bad book tho) so I probably won‘t be too disappointed! 6y

Speed read before the #manbooker2018 announcement because I‘ve got a feeling about this one.

placebeyondthespines I thought I could get through this one quickly as well but I realized it required me to slow down and take my time with the writing much more than other books—but it was well worth the investment. Interested to hear how others felt about this too. 6y
9999 Maybe my problem is that I tried to get through this quickly. It is not working for me. There are times i can see a brilliance, but I sometimes hate the flow of this book. 6y
ClairesReads @lostintranslation I‘m definitely seeing that now. I‘m really enjoying it, and the style as well but it‘s not a quick read- it really demands all of your attention 6y

#readharder2018 and #manbooker2018 double hit with this beast. Apparently this is ‘The Moby Dick of trees‘ so maybe I‘ll like it?
It‘s a book about nature anyway.

Emilymdxn I adored this book - I know it‘s been very divisive but it‘s probably the best book I read this year! I really hope you like it 6y
charl08 Love that cover. 6y
ClairesReads @charl08 it‘s the ANZ ARC 😊 6y

ClairesReads @Emilymdxn that‘s good to hear...I‘m looking forward to it 6y
Redheadrambles Ooh I have never seen that cover version 6y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles it‘s another sneaky ARC which I didn‘t get in advance of publication- but I also didn‘t pay for it so no complaints here! 6y

What are the odds that on the very day of #ManBooker2018 shortlist announcement, one of the authors on the list is at my local #independentbookstore 👏🏽🙌🏽. What luck!! It was such a pleasure meeting Esi Edugyan and I‘m looking forward to reading WASHINGTON BLACK! Congrats Esi! 📚🥂

The #manbookershortlist is here!! I didn‘t quite get through the whole long list but I did read all these ones.

It‘s pretty close to what I would have picked actually! I‘d have swapped out the mars room for Normal People (which I can‘t believe isn‘t here), but I‘m happy other than that. What do you think??

#manbooker2018

JenniferP I don‘t make an effort to read all the nominees but I did read and enjoy The Overstory and am not surprised it made the list. I‘d also like to read Washington Black sometime. (edited) 6y
BarbaraBB I am not happy at all. Only two of my favorites made it to the shortlist. Two others I didn‘t like at all and the remaining two I haven‘t read and I don‘t appeal to me. So that‘s how I feel 😕 6y
Simona @BarbaraBB I‘m quite happy with the shortlist. All three my favorites are shortlisted, and others three - I simply ignore them 😘 6y

BookwormM I read the whole list and think these deserve their place although I only predicted 4 of them 6y
Emilymdxn @JenniferP the overstory was my absolute favourite! 6y
Emilymdxn Sorry to hear that @BarbaraBB which ones were your faves? (edited) 6y
Emilymdxn @Simona ooh which ones are you ignoring? 6y
Emilymdxn @BookwormM ooh which ones???? I‘m so nosy about what everyone thinks 6y
BarbaraBB The Long Take is my fav. I also liked Everything Under. 6y
Simona Washington Black, Everything Under and Mars Room. 🤷‍♀️😘 6y
BookwormM I predicted The Overstory, The Long Take, Everything Under, Warlight, The Mars Room and In our Mad and Furious City 6y
