Sadia | Colleen Nelson

Pickpick

This was a wonderful book focused on Sadia & 2 other Muslim girls, all immigrants to Canada. Mariam has started de-jabbing (changing clothes & removing her headscarf) at school, Sadia is set on continuing to wear hers even as it makes playing basketball more difficult, and Amira is a newly arrived refugee from Syria. Along with their classmates they deal with changing friendships and seeing a wider perspective through a class photography project.

I‘ve been working to add more books with girls in sports to my class library, and I‘ve ordered this one to put on the shelf. It‘s absolutely a story of friendship and family and communication. It‘s also about the love of basketball at various levels, from playing as a middle schooler to the complete dedication of college fans to the fun of shooting hoops with your friends.

This week I‘ve chosen a couple of books in which softball plays a major part. Both of these are books I‘ve read, but I still need to get hold of copies to add to my class library.

Karisimo I‘ve read both of these authors but not these titles! Thanks for sharing! 8mo

This was a great middle grade story about learning to deal with tough things and learning from your own mistakes. It‘s about learning to cope, to communicate, and consider others. It‘s about that point in life when you realize your parents are just people too, and sometimes they make big mistakes. It‘s also very much about softball and love of the game. 🥎

I‘m looking for some help Litsy friends. I‘m not really a sports person, but I‘ve worked over the years to add more sports books to my mostly 6th-8th grade class library. Yesterday I had a specific request for books about girls in sports and realized I‘ve got very few books to recommend. So, if you‘ve got great #MiddleGrade suggestions other than the few books shown here, please send them my way!

Daisey @LibrarianRyan You‘ve always got great recs, can you share a few for this topic? 2y
LibrarianRyan Wow. I‘ll need to look. I can come up with authors but most wrote about boys. Let me see what I can find. Cheer is the only one off the top of my head about cheerleading. 2y
LibrarianRyan Roller girl, breaking the ice, skating shoes , tumble, love double Dutch, up for air, the distance to home. The girl who threw butterflies, lupe wing won‘t dance, taking up space, #great wall of Lucy Lu, there was a series called Kicks, Ana on the edge, There are just not enough sports books with girls. Ughh 2y

Sharpeipup There's bound to be one about gymnastics but I cannot think of it right now. 2y
sblbooks This one is on my TBR. 2y
CarolynM Not sure if they‘re middle grade (we don‘t divide schools the same way as the US) but there is some good Australian girls sport books around. The Netball Gems series (about netball, obvs) might not be relevant but Ellyse Perry has a soccer one as well as her cricket books 2y
CarolynM Also Sam Kerr‘s Kicking Goals series is about soccer 2y
CarolynM This is a good covering all sorts of sports (using Australian women as examples) 2y
Daisey @LibrarianRyan Thank you, I‘ll be looking these up. Your answer at least made me feel a little better about my very short list. Definitely agree we need more of these! 2y
Daisey @Sharpeipup @sblbooks Thanks! I‘ll be checking some of these out! 2y
Daisey @CarolynM Thanks! I‘m not sure how easy a few of these will be for me to find to check out before buying, but I really appreciate another perspective! 2y
Itchyfeetreader I M not great at ages is this one appropriate? 2y
Itchyfeetreader This also has female as well as male perspectives. Adult book but pretty accessible although not sure on if there is any profanity in there 2y
Daisey @Itchyfeetreader Thanks, I‘ll take a look. 2y

Shenice is the captain of an all Black softball team headed to a championship, but she faces distraction in the form a family mystery about her great grandpa and the end of his baseball dreams. The resolution of the story was a bit abrupt, but Nic Stone does a great job of blending together a contemporary sports story and African American history. 🥎
