#Bookhaul! My husband gave me a Powell‘s gift card for Christmas but then said I couldn‘t use until we moved back (rude!). So now that we‘re back and I finished the taxes yesterday, I made the drive and found some great books. I removed myself from the store when too many things started looking good. 😂 You all know how that is.
Today is national Trans day of visibility. My son came out to us in 2013 at 11 years old. I admire him for being able to be his authentic self. Trans people represent 1-2% of the population. They want to live life just as you we do, and have the same rights that we do.
If the love for your child is contingent on them being a cis-gender heterosexual then you are the problem. Not the transgender person who wants to use the bathroom.
A choose your own adventure book for learning about gender identity, sexuality, & the differences between biological sex & gender identity.
Fairly basic, sometimes reductive & repetitive, & occasionally plays up stereotypes. But is also a fun starting point for anybody‘s journey into learning more about gender identity, while also briefly touching on the intersections of race, class, & disability & the difficulties facing those groups.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
Soft pick because this is a frustrating, sometimes painful read. It's a great illustration of the phrase “don't be your child's first bully,“ though the mom certainly isn't the worst; she doesn't put her child in conversion camp or pray over him or kick him out, just refuses to accept his name and identity. Just.
It's certainly a valid story and she does learn and grow, becoming a “SuperAlly!“ in the end. Includes a letter from the son.
You fear that Alex will be marginalized, but the first and foremost marginalization is family rejection.
The trans rights annual readathon is almost here!
March 21-31
I will be reading:
Disappoint Me by Nicola Dinan
Little Rot by Akwaeke Emezi
Confessions of the Fox by Jordy Rosenberg
This said,” pick me “ ,at a local bookshop. Thought it might be good for my grandson but also thought I would read it first. I‘m not a graphic novel fan but this was an easy read. For anyone grappling with gender issues or wishing to understand these things , a easy and interesting read. I will be giving it to my grandson.
Not being a MiddleGrade student, it‘s probably unfair of me to rate, so let‘s call it a low pick. Born a girl but uncomfortable with culture messages of what she *should* be interested in, Bug is also mourning her recently deceased Uncle (who might be haunting her!) I could identify with the confusion of being told “just be yourself!” But WHO is YOU when you don‘t know what you feel and are uncomfortable in your own skin? #BannedBook #Transgender
I requested all three of these books because a friend told me that an Ohio teacher has been reprimanded for offering these to her students. I don‘t know all the details but I do know and fully believe in allowing books be available to readers. Letting my library know these books are valued. #readbannedbooks #heatedblanket #bringit #lfg
