Ned is prisoner without so much as a window to count the passing days. He imagines a conversation with Robert where he criticizes Ned‘s honor, he thinks against of his sister Lyanna & his promise.
Varys comes with wine & news of Arya (who escaped) & Sansa(still betrothed). & he begs Ned to recant & proclaim Joff as the true heir, reminding Ned of the Lannisters bloodthirsty ways.

Bklover Poor Ned! His “honor” is certainly not working well for him! 1y

BethM @Bklover dumb ways to die🤦‍♀️ 1y
HeyT @BethM I heard the sound clip when I read that comment lol 1y
Roary47 @BethM and @HeyT I also heard music on that. 😅 @Bklover I agree he‘s not really given a choice here, and I‘m getting concerned at what it might mean for their future. 🥺 1y

King Robert returns from the hunt gravely injured (by a boar, or treason) & leaves Ned to rule until Joff is of age.

At the end of the chapter Littlefinger tells Ned “you wear you honor like a suit of armor, you think it‘s protecting you but it‘s weighing you down”
There are even more examples of this here, as he declines to tell Robert the truth of Joff‘s paternity & gives up advantage over Cersei dispute Renly‘s protests.

BethM I feel like this is really the pivotal oh shit moment. 1y
5feet.of.fury @BethM it‘s really obvious to everyone who is not Ned… 😩 1y

Bklover Ned is an idiot!! Should have told Robert. Should have told EVERYONE. 1y
5feet.of.fury @Bklover should have told ANYONE except the only person he did tell… crazy Cersei 1y
Bklover Yes! What was the point of that?! To give her time to prepare?? 🙄 1y

Ned is back to work while King Robert is out hunting. He hears tales from townsfolk that they were attacked by raiders -but not raiders- Lannister men in disguise lead by The Mountain. Ned call for justice against the Mountain & sends men after them. Varys critiques Ned for not sending the young Ser Loras who bested the Mountain at the tourney and Ser Ilyn.

Ned‘s been asleep for nearly a week after his injury. He worries for his daughters. Jaime has fled the city. Robert & Cersei come to see Ned. Ned sticks to the story about Catelyn seizing Tyrion under his command. Cersei tries to get under his skin so he spills the real reason he was at the brothel. Robert commands that Ned remain the Hand, & gives him no choice by saying if Ned doesn‘t do it, it will be Jaime.

Bklover Ned has absolutely no control of his life. None. 1y
5feet.of.fury @Bklover nope. & Robert knows it. With Jaime as Hand it would be even more trouble for the Starks 1y
BethM I just wish he would‘ve told him to pound sand in Winterfell before taking the job. 1y
5feet.of.fury @BethM yup, they just embroiled themselves more in the King‘s & Lannisters‘ drama 1y

We start in a brothel, once again Littlefinger tries to get under Ned‘s skin. Ned poses the question of just how my bastards Robert has sired. Littlefinger says many including the ones Cersei killed. On the way to the castle they are confronted by Jaime Lannister & soldiers over Tyrion‘s detainment. Ned takes responsibility for Cat‘s actions. Jaime spares Ned but he orders the soldiers kill Ned‘s men & Ned gets a broken leg in the fight.

BooksNBowls Poor Ned. Can‘t catch a break. 😭😭 Even though I know what‘s coming, I‘m still rooting for him. 💔 1y
Bklover Ned‘s sense of honor hasn‘t helped him - not even one tiny little bit! 1y
5feet.of.fury @Bklover @BooksNBowls I know! & poor Jory! 1y
Roary47 Heartbreaking chapter. Poor Ned. I hope it turns around for him. 😢 1y

Ned confronts Robert about his plot to kill Dany & the “dragonspawn” in her belly. “Have the years unmanned you so that you tremble at the shadows of an unborn child?” After a heated argument with the king and his advisers, Ned quits & feels it may be best to make a quick exit because of what he‘s just done -& what Catelyn has done. But the mysteries still eat at him.

Roary47 Littlefinger is turning into the devil on your shoulder to Ned. What is his goal? Just need to keep reading to find out. 1y
5feet.of.fury @Roary47 Totally!! Littlefinger wants to steal Ned‘s wife, but other than that I don‘t know what his drama is 1y

5feet.of.fury The chapter starts & ends around the young knight that was killed by the Mountain in Sansa‘s chapter. Ned laments that everyone will say this death was “in the Hand‘s honor” & this is an honor he does not want. By the end he realizes this was Jon Arryn‘s squire who may have known something about the former Hand‘s death. 1y
5feet.of.fury We find out that Cersei & Robert‘s fight was because she forbade him to fight in the melee. 1y
5feet.of.fury Ned calls out Robert on his BS, a couple times, 1) after his squires say “the armor was made too small” 2) people in the melee would let Robert win -who would fight the king?! (Although, later, Varys has other opinions on what would have happened in the melee) 1y

5feet.of.fury Robert let‘s his true thoughts on his heir, Joffrey, be known ..and it‘s really the first time I‘ve thought he had a brain 1y
5feet.of.fury At the tourney: the Hound makes a fool of “the Kingslayer” Jaime Lannister. Ser Loras, the knight of flowers unhorses the Mountain …& the Mountain goes unhinged, kills his horse & attacks Ser Loras. The Hound saves him facing down his brother until Robert orders them to stand down. Ser Loras gives The Hound the win. The Hound gets the money & the love of the people. 1y
5feet.of.fury Ned is contemplating WHY Tyrion would attack Bran & what little sense it makes when Varys comes calling and reveals more conspiracies with Lannisters at the center. 1y
Roary47 There was so much! Still a lot of questions, but I‘m glad we find more that pinpoint the Lannister‘s. However, I‘m also suspicious this is a red herring especially with Tyrion. It seems he is getting set up by someone. Hmmm… 1y
BooksNBowls @Roary47 totally agree! Cersei? 1y
BooksNBowls There‘s so much going on!! Aghhh so many hands in the game! 1y
5feet.of.fury @BooksNBowls @Roary47 so much! I know Tyrion is the black sheep, seems like his siblings are setting him up. But no one else has any idea what Bran saw before he fell! Ned‘s on the right track though. It doesn‘t make and sense, and less sense since Tyrion made Bran a saddle, which hopefully someone will talk sense into Catelyn 1y
Bklover This is a good example why Cat needs Ned. He might talk some sense into her. 1y
BethM I agree with @Bklover I think Cat and Ned together would‘ve made less stupid choices. Also, this is where I think you get a real sense for how horrifying GRRM can make characters (ser Gregor). 1y
5feet.of.fury @Bklover yesss theyd help eachother think it through. 1y
5feet.of.fury @BethM that too, the Mountain‘s brutality & his interaction with the Hound was very interesting. 1y

Upcoming tourney creates problems.
Ned reads the book of lineages Jon Arryn had, tries to retrace his steps. Leading to an armorer‘s apprentice, Gendry, who he takes for a king‘s bastard, his apprentice fee was paid by a mysterious lord

dabbe This picture is a favorite meme for teachers. The words? “Brace yourself, final exams are coming!“ 🤣🤩🤗 1y
Roary47 I feel like every time I read Ned‘s perspective I get more questions that make me go Hmmm. 1y
5feet.of.fury @Roary47 Ned‘s trying to solve a mystery and making more questions than answers at this point for sure! 1y
BethM Just keep it to yourself Ned! 1y

Eddard is investigating the death of the former Hand (Catelyn‘s sister‘s husband, Lord Arryn). Ned asks for a book that Lord Arryn requested hoping for a clue. Littlefinger advises that there are many spies to lookout for.

Bklover Sometimes I think Ned understands Arya, and then I don‘t. Also it feels a bit like Ned is so caught up in his own thoughts that he is missing what is going on around him. 1y
5feet.of.fury @Bklover I feel like he thinks it‘s just a phase for Arya. at home he had his own advisors, & Catelyn, the Septa, old Nan to help him with his day to day and the girls & no one is looking out for Ned now. Well, Littlefinger is but I‘m suspicious about that 😂 1y
BooksNBowls @Bklover I agree! And Ned‘s downfall has always been his sense of honor and duty. It will come to bite him later unfortunately. If it‘s possible to be TOO good, then he‘s definitely that. 1y
Sargar114 @Bklover @5feet.of.fury @BooksNBowls definitely a “negative” trait to be honorable in Westeros. I do think Ned understands his daughter but is also trying to push her in the direction the world wants her to go thinking it‘s for her own good. Ned being Ned I suppose 1y
