Rhubarb Custard Bars!

Delicious, tangy, tart. I used a little less sugar than called for but not much—rhubarb is already tart anyway. The custard comes together very quickly—you won‘t be whisking for very long.

This recipe is very similar to the Grapefruit Custard, also delicious. I did not strain anything through a sieve, same as when I did the Cranberry Custard.

Paging through old cookbooks always makes me laugh - foods and dishes that have fallen out of style, name changes and language usage changes (there‘s a lot of "Oriental" sesame oil in these recipes.)
This page amused me because we have shelves in the basement for extra giant cans of tomatoes, ramen noodles, and the Costco impulse buys, which we refer to as "THE LARDER"
For an ‘80s cookbook, this has some solid recipes and good advice.

Tamra I love doing the same! The pictorial and even photo representations of people in the much older ones are a cultural blast into the past. It‘s cringey as in “I can‘t look away.” 🫣 6d
AlaMich I wonder if larder vs pantry is a regional thing? 🧐 6d
PatriciaU When I was a child, that space in the basement was known as the “root cellar!” 6d

Aimeesue @Tamra it‘s like a time capsule! 6d
Aimeesue @AlaMich Maybe! Or class difference? I grew up in Massachusetts, and it was always called a pantry. (edited) 6d
Aimeesue @PatriciaU Ha! The house I grew up in, the cellar always used to flood! A lot different from the finished basement we have now. (edited) 6d

Oh so spot on! Completely satisfied my curry lust. I will add a note to include a dollop of plain yogurt & cilantro. #Mtcookbook

JamieArc I may have taken a screenshot of this post so I could zoom in and look at the recipe 🧐. I should see if my library has this cookbook though! 7d
Tamra @JamieArc yes! Do check it out to see if you might like it. 7d
mabell For me, yogurt is an obligatory curry accompaniment 😆 4d

Amusing myself this afternoon paging through this old cookbook that I got for Mother‘s Day. Pearson was the quintessential New Englander - practical, humble, friendly, but not overly so. Reminds me of my grandfather, who was his contemporary. Many somewhat sexist references to men/women in the kitchen, but that‘s the 19050s for you.
Cooking was a different animal then - I will NOT be making anything I have to steam for three hours! 😆

Tamra 😅 I don‘t blame you! 2w
LeahBergen Pretty photo! 2w
Aimeesue @Tamra I might make some of the cookies, though! 😁 2w
Aimeesue @LeahBergen Thanks! All my super ancient cooking utensils were happy to get out and show off. I use that avocado green nut chopper thingamabob all the time! Still has pistachios in it, I now see. 😂 2w

Prepping Chicken Shawarma Salad for dinner tonight after IRL bookclub. It‘s a salad you can make the components ahead and toss together when it‘s time to eat. I‘m craving the lemon tahini dressing. 😋 #Mtcookbook

LeahBergen Yum! I love shawarma. 2w
mabell Lovely photo! I‘ve tried a few recipes from their blog - really good! 2w
Tamra @LeahBergen it was/is delicious! 2w

Little Rhubarb Galette. The crust is buttery and flaky like phyllo dough. The whole thing is delicious. Recipe here: https://www.vermontcreamery.com/products/mini-rhubarb-galettes

mcctrish Ooo looks delicious and I still have some rhubarb to harvest 🤔 3w
JenniferEgnor @mcctrish I‘m jealous. It doesn‘t grow well in the south! 3w
mcctrish That‘s a shame, it‘s the lowest maintenance food stuff to grow imo 3w
JenniferEgnor @mcctrish 🤣. I plan on growing it when we move north. Have you heard of the ‘forced‘ growing method? 3w
Purpleness That looks delicious! Enjoy 3w
