Orange cover for the #HauntedShelf #SkeletonCrew cover scavenger hunt and sadly fits the cadaver prompt for #WickedWhispers #BookSpinBingo #ReadAway2024 #Spookoween #31by31
Edited to add: this book completes the August 2024 #TBRTarot prompt - a book based on a true story / real person
I have zero recollection of placing this on hold, but I guess we are reading about cholera today 😅 #hauntedshelf #skeletoncrew
“The dog it was that died.” I had to Google the line as I‘d never read Goldsmith‘s satiric elegy. OUCH!
Very fitting summation of the novel. Both Kitty and her husband Walter are difficult characters to like and empathize with, but are most definitely human in being their own worst enemies.
The reference to Chinese staff as “boy(s)” was grating each time I heard it, but is apropos to the era.
Over generations, the gene pool of the first farmers became increasingly dominated by individuals who could drink beer on a regular basis. Most of the world‘s population today is made up of descendants of those early beer drinkers, and we have largely inherited their genetic tolerance for alcohol.🍻🍺

A very comprehensive book that amongst other things takes in the slave trade, a cholera Pandemic and a slave uprising. Well worth devoting time to this Read.

There has been a question floating around - If you could read a book again for the first time what book?
Luckily (?) with my bad memory this isn't an issue for me. I haven't read this in years and while I sort of knew where it was going I was again caught unawares of the events.
I knew the language was gorgeous, & again I was very taken with the writing. I had forgotten how awful Kitty was as a person it is so interesting to see 👇
Y'all this book sucked me in! I'm trying to do better about my #nonfiction reading and this book focuses on the cholera outbreak in London. This was a fascinating read part medical thriller part medical mystery and well paced. #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks
For #readingtheamericas2023 I selected this title for Barbados. Again this is one of my favorite historical authors and I feel she did a wonderful job pulling the reader into her world. She did a very good job bringing this country to life as well as historic details and situations many know little about. #bookspin @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks
