"[Machado] bends genres to shape startling stories that map the realities of women's lives and the violence visited upon their bodies."

I don't normally love short stories, but I thoroughly enjoyed this collection. It will definitely stick with me.

ephemeralwaltz Great photo! I am obsessed with this collection. 6y

This was not what I was expecting. I haven't decided if I liked it or not. I think I need to reread the ending I feel I missed something, I think I was too tired (but I had to finish it! Lol).

BarbaraBB I think it‘s just that and you missed nothing (sorry, obviously I was a bit underwhelmed 😉). 6y

A collection of short stories about the human condition, highlighted with the paranormal. It was ok. Definitely brought up some good discussion topics, but I'm finding I don't love paranormal writings. It takes me out of a story, especially if it's forced. If it's a fantasy book about vampires, I'm in. But if you just throw a vampire into a story, I'm out.

TheBookgeekFrau Ok, that‘s hysterical!! 😂💜 7y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego It was Ok, I already knew the plot twist so that kinda ruined it for me. I've heard the movie is better so I'll have to check it out, cuz I can't remember if I've actually seen it or not. 7y

Just finished this book. Really well written & engaging. I love reading books that take place in other countries/cultures. I need to read the prequel now. It's meant to postapocalypic, but it felt more like I was reading a historical fiction or even a contemporary rural storyline. Except for the few times it mentioned computers. (Cont. 👇👇)

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego But then again in a postapocalypic scenario it's realistic that society would be forced to return to more basic/primitive way of living/traditions. I need more explanation as why it's a PA setting though. I also think I may have missed some social commentary aspects. But all of the above concerns just make me want to read/learn more! 7y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I also loved that Onye was a total feminist icon! No f%@ks given. ✊♀️ 7y
TieDyeDude I just finished the Binti trilogy, and I'm very interested in reading more by her. 7y

Well that was interesting. A review on the back of the books says "unrelentingly bizarre" and I have to agree with that. If you're looking for a completely unique read, this is it. I'm not sure what to make of it all yet, but there will be some good discussions for book club.

readordierachel "Unrelenting bizarre" is a perfect description. This one sticks with you. 7y
LikelyLibrarian I had to read this book in college and hated it. Bizarre doesn‘t begin to describe it 🙄 7y
AmyG One of the oddest books I have ever read. Talk about “suspending belief”. 😳 7y

ephemeralwaltz Yes yes yes yes so bizarre!! But I loved it SO MUCH ❤️📚 7y
Swe_Eva I never got why Arty was so mesmerizing and thus the other characters acting like his sheep was incomprehensible to me. Interesting idea, but believable characters is very important to me. 7y
monalyisha This definitely would‘ve been a good one for book club! 6y

Just finished this book last night. I do love me some Liane Moriarty. I also love it when there are discussion questions at the end of books. Will definitely be bringing these up at our next meeting @Bessiecat 💕📚

jillannjohn I‘ve read a few of her others but not this one...yet. 7y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @jillannjohn it's not quite as good as BLL or Husband's Secret, but I still enjoyed it. 7y
jillannjohn Good to know. Thanks! 7y
MallenNC This is my favorite after The Husband‘s Secret bc I thought the story was different from her others in an interesting way. (edited) 7y

Cat's Eye | Margaret Atwood

#bestiebookclub @Bessiecat

Just finished my Book club book for Feb, I'm a little behind. My Bestie chose this book a) because we love Atwood, and b) because she heard it's like Mean Girls but for adults. It is similar to Mean Girls but only in regards to the bullying.

It's about a woman who returns to her home town, and who has to come to terms with events of her childhood.

I liked it. Not necessarily profound, for me. But relatable.
