Art of Satoshi Kon | Satoshi Kon

It has been a long, stressful week so far. I haven't read much since Friday. We did watch an excellent movie last night, though; Tokyo Godfathers. An irreverent story set between Christmas and New Years where a trio of homeless find an abandoned baby. The story is constantly surprising and wholesome, and the animation is fantastic. We also recently watched A Christmas Story Christmas (both too reliant on nostalgia and refreshingly it's own thing)↩

TieDyeDude and Office Christmas Party (decent, but not nearly as entertaining as expected with that cast). We wanted to watch Rudolph, but Hulu only has a couple Rankin and Bass specials streaming, so we watched Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and the hilarious and adorable Disney Prep & Landing shorts. #holidaymovies 1w

The Art of Drew Struzan | David J. Schow, Drew Struzan

#tuesdaytunes

Before YouTube or even the trailers at the beginning of VHS tapes, movie posters were sometimes the only source of information a viewer had about the movie before going to see it. And perhaps no one understood this quite like Drew Struzan, who died yesterday. His name deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Lucas, Spielberg, and Williams for his part in Indiana Jones, Star Wars, E.T, and more.

Cuilin Yes, he certainly created the “look” so that we knew what to expect. RIP 2mo
TieDyeDude Video is of John Williams conducting the Raider's March from Indiana Jones! 2mo
MemoirsForMe I didn‘t realize Drew designed all these iconic posters. Such a great loss to the industry. 2mo

Truly amazing artwork of Star Wars characters, places and spaceships. A must read for any Star Wars fans.

If I had a coffee table, this would definitely be on it. This book indicates that there are variations in Harris's style, not all pieces are the same carefully-coloured, impressionist brush-stroke versions of sci fi scenes shown to such great effect on John Scalzi's Old Man's War series book covers.
A large portion of the art in this collection is similar in style however, and surprise, all are my new favourites.

Robotswithpersonality 2/3 I'll admit, as opposed to the balance between text and image that was the 70s sci fi art book I read recently, this is majority image, and perhaps because it wasn't nifty trivia and history, I am of the subjective opinion that the few artist reflections, and the extended storytelling in the latter third don't add as much to the book. To each their own. 7mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 If you get a chance, at least take a flip through to appreciate that sci fi cover art doesn't have to bow to the prominent 'dark, sharp, cold' aesthetic. 7mo

You know that quote from Last Holiday, where Queen Latifah's character is admiring the hotel and asks : “don't that ceiling ever just make you want to cry?“
THAT'S how I feel about John Harris's impressionist sci fi art. Forgive the genre pun, but I find a lot of typical, modern sci fi art to be alienating. It's sharp and cold. Even if the subject matter is about what is unknown, I need to know there can be warmth and softness and colour.
