Pickpick

I loved ‘Wordslut‘ and liked this one just as much. I love how Amanda makes linguistics both fascinating and fun! This one had the added bonus of being about cults and ‘cultish‘ language, which totally sucks me in. It looks at the use of specific language and at the ‘semantic murkiness‘ of influencing others, from Jonestown and Scientology to MLMs and workout ‘cults‘ and I couldn‘t stop listening to this audio! #booked2022 #aboutacultorreligion

Suet624 I was surprised by the addition of workout groups but it made total sense 2y
Ruthiella I‘m currently reading this for the same prompt! About 1/2 way through and I agree it‘s fascinating stuff! 2y
squirrelbrain This was so good! 2y
Cinfhen This was my pick too for the same prompt!!! She‘s amazing 🤩 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Yup, I just finished this. Popular choice for this prompt! And worth the time, for sure. 2y

Cinfhen Cool 😇 3y
alisiakae I have this and read it years ago. I felt the same as you, and it has been a book I don‘t reference as often as others. But 🎉🎉 for checking off a prompt! 3y

One woman's journey to finding something more to believe in. Tackled with alot of humour as she works her way through laughing yoga, burning man, shamans, soul cycle etc.
If you are looking for something serious, this is not it - but it definitely suited my mood and entertained me.
Read for #aboutacultorreligion for #booked2022 as well as #bookspin

Bk10 of January 2022 & #JumpStart2022 is done. I‘m on a roll! I loved this book but it‘s a little hard to categorise. It has similar underlying themes as her other books but the three MCs this time are all adults. It starts as the story of Travis,a man who has a talent for finding people & his search for Maggie then turns into the story of Theo,Calla & Bee who live in a community not unlike the movie The Village. #Booked2022 #AboutACultorReligion👇

Cinfhen I‘m intrigued!!!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks I have this one on my shelf!!! I'll get to it one of these days! 3y

This was a soft pick for me. I didn‘t learn anything strictly new, which was disappointing. But Montell made some very interesting connections about language and when ritualistic language is and isn‘t being used coercively.
