I liked this much more than I expected! At under 200 pages it‘s a quick read. And it isn‘t nearly as misogynistic as I was expecting from a hard-boiled detective novel 🤣. San Francisco Private detective Sam Spade figures out the various players in the search for/theft of the Maltese Falcon. #1001books #1000books

JazzFeathers I watched the classic film last year and truly enjoyed it. I really have to read the book too. 5y
AshleyHoss820 I struggled with this one and didn‘t enjoy it as much as I wanted to but I enjoyed The Glass Key! 😊😊😊 5y

It‘s long, exhausting, funny, bawdy, and completely absurd. Did I love it? No. Is it hard to believe this book is 350 years old? Yes? Does it belong on the 1001 books list? Absolutely. It‘s an original for sure. #1001books #1000books

BookwormM 🤣🤣I hated this one I found it really boring glad you enjoyed it 6y
DreesReads @BookwormM I definitely struggled in the chapters that were full of historical references. The endnotes helped but not enough! 6y

Ficciones | Jorge Luis Borges

Pickpick

A collection of odd stories, all having to do with books (thus the title). The vocabulary, structure, and content of this book mean it‘s not an easy read, but I liked the oddness. Like a cross between Calvino and Mieville—but Borges came first. #intranslation #1001books #1000books #501books

Swe_Eva I looove Borges!! 6y
DreesReads @Swe_Eva this is my first Borges! I don‘t really know why I haven‘t read him before. He is very original! 6y
Swe_Eva @AudreyMorris He was my first foray into grownup fiction and it blew my mind that someone could write like that. 💜 6y

It‘s weird, there is time travel, World War II, and a zoo on another planet. The story is told out of order. The narrator is unreliable. Probably. I enjoyed it, but should probably read it again to catch things I probably missed before I sorted out what was going on. #1001books #1000books

LizLemon I‘ve read it several times and every time I see something new. I think my inner ADHD child loves the circular-backward-inside-outside-upside down writing style 🤷🏼‍♀️ if you liked this, try any of his others. (edited) 6y
DreesReads @LizH I do like the inside out lack of linear storytelling. I generally prefer non-linear fiction, especially if there is only one narrator. 6y

The Stone Diaries | Carol Shields

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I liked that this novel the follows the life of 1 character, Daisy Goodwill, through her birth, childhood, marriage, widowhood, decline, and death. But the last 2-2.5 chapters didn‘t feel in keeping with her character through the earlier parts of the book. I can, though, see how it won prizes. It feels different, with the “plot” being a fictional life.

Lcsmcat This was the first Shields I read, and it sold me on her. I‘m reading one of hers right now: 6y
DreesReads @Lcsmcat I read Unless earlier this year, and preferred that one. Though they are quite different—other than the writing style. Both felt slow to me, or maybe calm is a better word? 6y
DreesReads It took me a while, both times, to settle in to the pace. And then I enjoyed it. It didn‘t surprise me the second time. 6y
Lcsmcat @AudreyMorris I liked Unless too. Also A Celibate Season, which she co-wrote with Blanche Howard, is amazing! 6y
