A beautiful story of two families bound by a shared history, told primarily in that space between the First and Second World Wars. A stunning examination of the way fate cruelly treated so many who suddenly found themselves outsiders in either Germany or England by virtue of citizenship or passports.
I had the privilege of hearing Behrens speak tonight, and was intrigued by how much of the book was based on personal family history. Five stars.
Illness during vacation (the worst!) + returning to real life + daughter who came down with a bug that has lasted the last few days = not enough reading and Litsy time. Fortunately everyone seems to finally be on the mend and life is thankfully returning to normal. Glad to rejoin my community of fellow book lovers!
