So a sad farewell to Kurt Wallender. A great last bow as he investigates the disappearance of daughter Linda's partners father, an ex naval commander. With a huge dose of cold War intrigue, I enjoyed this story, that involves soviet submarines and spys, while also noticing the detective's increasingly poignant loss of memory. At last I can try the TV series

I've been worrying about when to read the last wallander as he is a favourite character. He does however have a complicated relationship with his father, the grouse painting recluse, and his troubled daughter linda. I may brave reading it soon but will be sad to see the end of an interesting father/son/man.

The last book of the Wallander series, but my first Wallander. Then I had to go back, not to follow a series, but to follow a man , Wallander. I love Henning Mankells writing , I love how Wallander grows up & grows old. Lovely metaphors throughout.

So sad to finish the last Wallander novel. I've really enjoyed this series. Wallander is so flawed in such a realistic way that you're just always rooting for him. 😢💜

Celebrating an anniversary with the spousal unit with some dim sum and starting my very last Wallander novel ever. 😢

I found this one a slog for some reason. Maybe it was the fact that my edition (Vintage paperback) ran to almost 500 pages. I liked the inclusion of submarines, and the family storyline was touching. Now I can finally watch the last season of Branagh's Wallander.

Wallander ponders his mortality:

He would stay in his house for as long as possible. When he couldn't manage that anymore, he hoped the end would come quickly. What scared him more than anything was an old age spent simply waiting to die, a time when nothing of what had been his life was still possible.
