From one of America's best-loved storytellers - the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller WHERE THE HEART IS - comes a tale of a small Oklahoma town and the mystery that has haunted its residents for years. In 1972, windswept DeClare, Oklahoma, was consumed by the murder of a young mother, Gaylene Harjo, and the disappearance of her baby, Nicky Jack. When the child's pajama bottoms were discovered on the banks of Willow Creek, everyone feared that he, too, had been killed, although his body was never found.Nearly thirty years later, Nicky Jack mysteriously returns to DeClare, shocking the town and stirring up long-buried memories. But what he discovers about the night he vanished is more astonishing than he or anyone could have imagine. Piece by piece, what emerges is a story of dashed hopes, desperate love, and a secret that still cries out for justice...and redemption.

I had a couple false starts with Oklahoma but finally landed on this solid cold case crime story for my #52mysteries challenge. It got a little cheesy at times, but there‘s a strong sense of place and an interesting mystery.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag How fun! I‘m sure some states will be easier to find mysteries for than others. 4mo

This was a fun, quick audiobook. A murder, a missing child, a town full of interesting characters (good and bad), and a little bit of romance. All read to me in just a few hours by Lou Diamond Phillips!

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Cortg I'm sure he is! 7y
Reggie Sometimes he plays poker at my casino, but you would hardly know it's even him by his getup. 7y
sprainedbrain @Reggie Is he disguised or does he just have an interesting fashion sense? 😂 7y
TNbookworm I love her books! 7y
Reggie @sprainedbrain it's definitely a disguise because it's a hoodie and some crazy facial hair. He's very nice, I hear. 7y

Good mystery. As someone from Oklahoma, I did shake my head at the cousin trope. 😮

OMG! Does this happen In Real Life? “But what I‘ve ended up doing is cosmetic surgery. Scrotum tucks on aging dogs, breast reductions on cats that were allowed to deliver too many litters. I‘ve performed a nose job on a poodle because the owner thought her precious ‘Pearl‘ felt self-conscious about her appearance. I‘ve done penile implants on animals more interested in sleep than breeding and eye jobs on Pekingese so they wouldn‘t look so Asian.”

Redwritinghood Wow - I hope not. 7y
Bostonmomx2 The breast reductions?? Yes. I've never heard of a cat having it but dogs who've been overbred, their poor nips can be so enlarged it becomes necessary. 7y
