Written as a screenplay, this book describes the 1863 draft riots in New York City mostly from the viewpoint of Claire, a biracial teenager. Irish immigrants didn‘t want to be drafted to fight in the Civil War. The view was strengthened by the ability of wealthy “swells” to pay their way out of the draft, & the belief that former slaves would come north to take their jobs. The anger led to violence, looting, & a brutal response by Union soldiers.
