A VINTAGE MURDER MYSTERY John Lafcadios ambition to be known as the greatest painter since Rembrandt was not to be thwarted by a matter as trifling as his own death. A set of twelve sealed paintings is the bequest he leaves to his widow together with the instruction that she unveil one canvas each year before a carefully selected audience. Albert Campion is among the cast of gadabouts, muses and socialites gathered for the latest ceremony but art is the last thing on the sleuths mind when a brutal stabbing occurs....

Another Golden Age crime series that I am reading hopelessly out of order! I liked this. I thought it was clever and well-plotted and a little unusual in that the murderer is actually revealed well before the end… It‘s not my favourite Campion so far, but a good read.

One thing that impresses me about Allingham is her range of tone. If the last book (Sweet Danger) was a gloriously silly romp that brought out the best of Albert's eccentricities, this was a darker story and as a result a more subdued mood for our Universal Uncle and Amateur Adventurer. My grumpy Sherlock bookmark disapproves of my reading about other detectives...

Moray_Reads @vivastory have you read any Allingham? I think she's becoming my favourite Queen of Crime 6y
vivastory She's new to me. Where do you recommend I begin? 6y
Moray_Reads @vivastory The Crime at Black Dudley is the first so I'd start there and work chronologically (as I am). Campion has accepted interesting character arc from Lord Peter Wimsey caricature to independent existence 6y

I don't usually take a tea break in the afternoon but I'm struggling to get to the end of the working day! Time for coffee and Campion.

Moray_Reads @CouronneDhiver it took an effort but the coffee helped me get to the end, phew. Now it's weekend time! 6y

Camping out with Campion after a trek out to Davids Tea to fill up some tea tins. Currently drinking a pu'erh tea called Hot Chocolate.

Lindy That tea was one of the selections in my tea advent calendar. It was better than expected. ☕️ 8y
rabbitprincess @Lindy Yes, it is quite good. Did you take it with milk and/or sugar? I normally take tea black but this one might benefit from milk. 8y
Lindy @rabbitprincess I liked it black. My niece added milk and honey. 8y

A blurb from Agatha Christie never lies. There aren't many murder mysteries where the killer is known halfway through and it still works...
