Micah is a liar. That's the one thing she won't lie about. Over the years, she's duped her classmates, her teachers, and even her parents. But when her boyfriend Zach dies under brutal circumstances, Micah sets out to tell the truth. At first the truth comes easily-because it is a lie. Other truths are so unbelievable, so outside the realm of normal, they must be a lie. And the honest truth is buried so deep in Micah's mind even she doesn't know if it's real. The ultimate unreliable narrator takes readers on a thrill ride in this highly acclaimed novel. Prepare to grasp for truth until the very last page."Readers will get chills . . . [and] be guessing and theorizing long after they've finished this gripping story." -Publishers Weekly, starred review"[Micah's] suspenseful, supernatural tale is engrossing. . . . The chilling story she spins will have readers' hearts racing." -School Library Journal, starred review"An engrossing story of teenage life on the margins." -Kirkus Reviews, starred review

⭐️⭐️

When I read the synopsis, I thought it would be a teenage version of “Girl On The Train”. Then I fell into this web of lies and metaphors - was the pill and the “family illness” Micah‘s family‘s way of keeping her out of trouble and getting into certain situations? The lies on top of lies got to be too much. I like that it‘s a modern take on “the boy who cried wolf” but it was too disjointed for me.

I finished this audiobook two hours ago and I‘m still wondering what the hell just happened. I‘m fairly new to the ‘unreliable narrator‘ concept but felt this was extreme, given that I feel that I‘ve been lied to so much that I‘ve wasted my time sticking with this book until the end. I feel hoodwinked, even though the narrator herself constantly told me what a liar she was. The ending told me so little that I‘m a bit angry. A frustrating read.

First book finished for #readathon! I enjoyed some parts of this book but ultimately found the main characters' lies frustrating and a bit annoying. From a quick look at Goodreads it seems to be very much a marmite book. Have you read it? What do you think? #YA #youngadult

Taking a break from eyeball-reading to listen to this on audio while I hang up laundry. I'm quite happy to only have a few chapters left as I'm unfortunately not loving it #readathon #YA #youngadult

Style is good, the point of view never wavers. The narrator, who lies like she breathes is not someone the readers get to love or like. I found it boring. The reveal of the twist in the second part and the gimmick of Lie number one, etc of the third part got old really fast. In the end, I did not care what was happening to Micah, one way or the other. But the technique, the structure is solid and interesting, hence the three stars instead of two.

Karen_V Totally my thoughts on it, too. (edited) 8y

The title says it all. It's a love it or hate it kinda novel. It's leave no one indifferent. It's the unreliable narrator trope pushed to its limit. #maybookflowers #unreliablenarrator

The plot got side-tracked way too much and it was not what I expected, in a bad way. The happy ending seemed too fake and for me it decreased the quality of the book even further. Definitely #threwitacrosstheroom in anger. #photoadaynov16

Part one was realistic fiction, part two was fantasy and didn't even mention any of the storyline in part one. I don't know if I'm going make it through this book.

I love the concept behind an untrustworthy narrator. This author has a great style, and I really got into the characters. The story was very intriguing until an unexpected twist came into light. I'm still unsure about how I feel towards the twist, and I won't ruin it for others. It's worth a try if you like to question your narrator.

Pickpick

You know a book is good when you come out of it feeling like the world has been shaken and nothing is real.
