This way, they can cross jurisdictions to quickly evade police since plural marriage (among other practices) are illegal. Other such groups have settled in Mexico and Canada.

I originally felt sorry for the author. It was heartbreaking to see how her childhood was affected by her mother's life in polygamy. But then, as Spencer grows up, everyone in her life warns her to avoid marrying into polygamy. But instead of listening to literally everyone, she runs off to be the second wife of a polygamist. And then her whole life pretty much goes downhill from there, just like everyone told her it would.

Brain break time. Someone recommended this to me and I totally forgot who it was 🙈 but I want to say thank you!! I need a break from all this school reading. I am totally excited for this memoir 📖

This is a very detailed account of Spencer‘s life as a Fundamentalist Latter Day Saint (#FLDS) and destitute polygamist raising a shit-ton of kids. I couldn‘t help but love her blunt personality, but my heart ached for her. If you‘ve read The Sound of Gravel, you might be interested to know that Irene Spencer‘s husband Verlan and Ruth Wariner‘s father Joel were brothers. ⬇️ #cults

First book finished in my #litsypartyofone this weekend - this is actually the third book I've read written by women who married into or were born into the notorious LeBaron polygamous Mormon cult, and I don't think they get easier as I become more familiar with the many branches of this tree. It continues to break my heart to learn the lengths people will go to in the name of their faith. Fascinating.

This book was so engrossing & kept me up reading much later than I should have. Irene became the 2nd wife of Verlan LeBron in 1953. The 28 years of their marriage were incredibly difficult and heartbreaking. During those years she bore him 13 children and watched him marry several more women. When I hear of plural wives, I always wonder, "why do they stay?" This book answers that question & tells what living "The Principle" is really like.

I'm obsessed with #polygamist memoirs and this is definitely one of the best I've read. #booktober #memorablememoirs
