In Praise of Walking: A New Scientific Exploration
In Praise of Walking: A New Scientific Exploration | Shane O'Mara
3 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
A surprisingly fascinating scientific consideration of humanitys most ordinary activity. Ron Charles, Washington Post In this wonderful (John Brandon, Forbes) book, neuroscientist Shane OMara invites us to marvel at the benefits walking confers on our bodies and brains, and to appreciate the advantages of this uniquely human skill. From walkings evolutionary origins, traced back millions of years to life forms on the ocean floor, to new findings from cutting-edge research, he reveals how the brain and nervous system give us the ability to balance, weave through a crowded city, and run our inner GPS system. Walking is good for our muscles and posture;?it helps to protect and repair organs, and can slow or turn back the aging of our brains. With our minds in motion we think more creatively, our mood improves, and stress levels fall. Walking together to achieve a shared purpose is also a social glue that has contributed to our survival as a species. As our lives become increasingly sedentary, OMara makes the case that we must start walking againwhether its up a mountain, down to the park,?or simply to school and work. In Praise of Walking?illuminates the joys, health benefits, and mechanics of walking, and reminds us to get out of our chairs and discover a happier, healthier, more creative self.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

An exercise theory I can support!

“One of life‘s great horrors as you‘re walking is waiting for permission to cross the street,” he tells me, when we are forced to stop for traffic – a rude interruption when, as he says, “the experience of synchrony when walking together is one of life‘s great pleasures”.

GingerAntics Oh I LOVE walking!!! (Maybe because I have to because we don‘t have a car) I know my brain is foggier these days since I haven‘t been waking to and from work every day. 5y
TheAromaofBooks My husband & I are both serious introverts - we never really dated - we just started going for walks around town in the evening & it's amazing how much you end up discussing & discovering when you do that. Married almost ten years - still love taking walks in the evenings!! 5y
