Kitchen Confidential Annotated Edition
Kitchen Confidential Annotated Edition: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly | Anthony Bourdain
1 post
A deluxe, annotated edition of Kitchen Confidential to celebrate the life of Anthony Bourdain, featuring new photo inserts Over two decades ago, the New Yorker published a now infamous article, "Don't Eat Before Reading This," by then little-known chef Anthony Bourdain. Bourdain spared no one's appetite as he revealed what happens behind the kitchen door. The article was a sensation, and the book it spawned, the now iconic Kitchen Confidential, became an even bigger sensation and megabestseller. Frankly confessional, addictively acerbic, and utterly unsparing, Bourdain pulls no punches in this memoir of his years in the restaurant business. Fans will love to return to this deliciously funny, delectably shocking banquet of wild-but-true tales of life in the culinary trade, laying out Bourdain's more than a quarter-century of drugs, sex, and haute cuisine. Including a handwritten introduction and annotations done by Bourdain about a decade after the book was originally published, this edition also features previously unpublished photos to accompany the now-classic text.

So I didn‘t know this was going to happen this year, but I‘ve slowly been reading my way through all of Bourdain‘s books. Some I hadn‘t read — like his graphic novels, which I just thought were okay — and others I‘ve read in new ways like this annotated version of KC that I really enjoyed. All I have left now is Les Halles CB, Typhoid Mary, and Bone in the Throat. Gone Bamboo I read on audio, and the format didn‘t work for me, so ⬇️

Megabooks I‘m going to try to squeeze in a print reread because I loved his short story collection in print. I‘m going to try to wrap up the year with some final thoughts after I finish them all. (edited) 2w
Scochrane26 I didn‘t realize he wrote that many books. 2w
Megabooks @Scochrane26 yeah, if I‘m counting correct it‘s 14, including the GNs, cookbooks, etc. There‘s so much, and a lot of it is quite different, but there‘s an interview with him in the back of the annotated KC where his editor talks about how distinct his voice is, and it‘s true and that‘s the one same thing about all of them. He had a secret Reddit account he used for BJJ posts, and he couldn‘t hide it well because he used that same voice. 2w

Scochrane26 I listened to Kitchen Confidential & liked it, but I‘ve never watched his shows or read more. 2w
Megabooks @Scochrane26 I‘d read his early nonfiction when they came out (KC, A Cook‘s Tour, Medium Raw, Nasty Bits, Typhoid Mary), but that‘s as far as I‘d gone until this year. I watched the early seasons of No Reservations faithfully, but lost regular watching when I dropped cable. I‘ve gone through and watched more NR this year and some Parts Unknown. It‘s been nice. I seem to always have an author or two I deep dive each year, and he‘s been a good one! (edited) 2w
BarbaraBB I love that you‘re so dedicated 🧑‍🍳! I love his travels! 2w
Flaneurette Nice! I've been thinking about and slowly acquiring Louise Erdrich to attempt a deep dive next year/ not sure yet. I was always aware of AB but didn't properly appreciate him until after he was gone 😞 2w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB You know me -- I'm a completist! 2w
Megabooks @Flaneurette Yes! I'd love to do her backlist, too, but it's very intimidating. She's such a prolific author! Yeah, I hadn't been as tuned into stuff the last few years of his life. It was hard to watch (what I could) of the last couple of seasons of Parts Unknown because he looked so miserable. I've lost four friends to suicide, and I really empathized with his friends and family. 2w
