pickAnother graphic memoir centering a crisis of faith! I‘m on a roll…this one focuses on Mann‘s upbringing in an Orthodox Jewish community. At a young age, he realized that he was gay. This does a good job illustrating his difficulties navigating the traumas he experienced, as he notes, “at the intersection of high-demand religion and authoritarian parenting.” The art, by Mann and his partner Ryan Gatts, is simple and highlights shades of blue. ⬇️
psalva The story ends when Mann is about to head to college, but it leaves off at a good place when he is beginning to make choices to be truer to himself and create distance from his faith. I feel stories like this have the potential to be controversial for faithful folks. Personally, I felt this was respectful, though not uncritical, always focusing on the choices that the author made to be happy. I‘m happy I picked this up. (edited) 1mo
