4 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
The much-anticipated new fantasy series from Ransom Riggs, his first since introducing the #1 global phenomenon Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series. Seventeen-year-old Leopold Berry is seeing weird things around Los Angeles. A man who pops a tooth into a parking meter. A glowing trapdoor in a parking lot. A half-mechanical raccoon with its tail on fire that just wont leave him alone. Every hallucinatory moment seems plucked from a cheesy 1990s fantasy TV show called Max's Adventures in Sunderworldand thats because they are. Not a good sign. In the blurry weeks after his mothers death, a young Leopold discovered VHS tapes of its one and only season in a box headed for the trashand soon became obsessed. Losing himself in Sunder was the best way to avoid two things: grieving his mother and being a chronic disappointment to his overbearing father. But when the strange visions returnat the worst possible time on the worst possible dayLeopold turns to his best friend Emmet for help. Together they discover that Sunder is much more than just an old TV show, and that Los Angeles is far stranger than they ever imagined. And soon, hell realize that not only is Sunderworld real, but its in grave danger. Certain hes finally been chosen for greatness, Leopold risks everything to claim his destiny, save the world of his childhood dreams, and prove once and for all that hes not the disappointment his father believes him to be. But when everything goes terribly, horribly, excruciatingly wrong, Leopolds disappointments prove to be more extraordinary than he ever could have imagined. How do you battle darkness when no one believes in younot even yourself? Visionary storyteller Ransom Riggs weaves the familiar with the peculiar in a stunning tale of loss, triumph, friendship and magic, reminding readers everywhere that true heroes are made, not bornand that when youre never the chosen one, sometimes you have to choose yourself. Welcome to Sunderworld.

This was a fun novel to read. The world building is great and I loved the magical and supernatural elements that are utilized throughout were unique yet, at times, a bit twisted. Leopold is a great character. I felt as though he represents an average “loser” teen and young people can relate to, and seeing his growth throughout the novel only added to the entertainment. While it was slow at times, I was always wondering what would happen next.

This book was just so much fun to read. It really brought back that 90s nostalgia and I was living for it!

I loved the Peculiar Children series by Ransom Riggs so I was so excited to read this one and it definitely lived up to the anticipation.

I found myself so transported into the story and I felt like I was right beside Leopold in Sunder. I was rooting for him the entire time. I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series!

Riggs kicks off a new series that‘s a lot of fun & leaves me anxious for the sequel! Titular character & narrator, Leopold, opens up with a disastrous day. Since the death of his mom 5 years earlier, he no longer feels special or even like he belongs. His best friend, Emmett, certainly never sees visions of their once favorite TV show, the Sunderland. But Leopold keeps seeing strange things from parking attendants with wings to flaming raccoons!
