The stunning new novel from the prize-winning author of The Wake. 'Come to a place like this . . . and you will understand soon enough that this world is a great animal, alive and breathing.' Beast plunges you into the world of Edward Buckmaster, a man alone on a west-country moor. What he has left behind we don't yet know; what he faces is an existential battle with himself, the elements and with something he begins to see in the margins of his vision: some creature that is tracking him, the pursuit of which will become an obsession. This is a vivid exploration of isolation, courage and the search for truth. Short, shocking and exhilarating, it confirms Paul Kingsnorth as one of our most daring and rewarding contemporary writers.

Mehso-so

This is mostly an unusual, intriguing novel that feels like it could be an allegory in places. It features a man who is alone and is perhaps unraveling, with the structure of the writing matching his mental state. And it‘s post-apocalyptic? He‘s in a coma? In purgatory? I don‘t know. Then it has these weird cuts and the ending is kinda silly for all the work it did to get there.

britt_brooke Sounds weird. Will have to try it sometime. #stacked 6mo

What have I just read?! I *think* it's an account of a breakdown (possibly exacerbated by concussion, infection and hunger) but in another world it might be the testament of a discredited saint. There's a post-apocalyptic vibe, but maybe that's only in Buckmaster's consciousness and his rejection of the modern human world.

Throughout I had Julian Cope's song, Autogeddon Blues, going round in my head.

Vivid, bewildering, frustrating, compelling.

This is what I picked up while in CT. Anytime I am in an indie bookstore with shelftalkers, I buy one especially if I know nothing about it. Beast was one of those.

This guy writes in the 21st century using 11th-century English, apparently. I'm not sure I'm up for it, but isn't his new novel's cover fetching?

QueenAnne Beautiful cover, curious about this book! 8y

bibliothecarivs @ReadingEnvy Just saw your comment and wanted to reply because I had (almost) the same experience with Kingsnorth's The Wake. I read the book and like it, but the audio was incredible and really brought it to life for me. 4y
