This was a solid collection with a few truly stunning pieces. It‘s clear that Elis‘ strength lies in a deep understanding of the connection between music and language. This is his first book of poetry, so there were elements of style and subject that seemed unfocused. I‘d definitely be interested in reading one of his later works to see how his writing progressed. #Roll100 #JoyousJanuary @PuddleJumper @Andrew65
It's like watching surgery. If you want life and death, it's here. If you want pain and suffering, it's here. Flynn's a fine poet. There are some great images. He has this really soft touch that just doesn't prepare me for his cuts - the drugs, the sex. It feels like watching accidents on the tv news. I like my poetry a little more analytical. I found about half these poems to be genuinely memorable images. The rest of them just made me wince.
“Success and failure are silly terms in which to speak of living a life.”-Eula Biss
So true! Especially as a writer.

I received this book as a graduation gift from one of my favorite professors at my University. It is a collection of creative nonfiction essays where Eula Biss discusses her experience of race in America. Can‘t wait to read it. #nonfiction #creativenonfiction #essays #UofA
This poetry collection deals with the experience of immigrants from Central America to the US. It is both brutal and touching. 4⭐️
