Is She Really Going Out with Him? | Sophie Cousens
6 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
From the New York Times bestselling author of This Time Next Year, a hilarious love story about a disillusioned divorcee who agrees to let her children play matchmaker, for fans of Nora Goes Off Script. Columnist Anna Appleby has left her love life behind after a painful divorce. Who needs love when she has two kids, a cat and an ex-husband to think about? Besides, she'd rather be single than subject herself to the hell of online dating. But her office rival is vying for her column, and no column means no stable source of income. So in a desperate attempt to keep her job, Anna finds herself pitching a unique angle: Seven dates, all found offline, chosen by her children. From awkward encounters to unexpected connections, Anna gamely begins to put herself out there, asking out waiters and the mailman, even her celebrity crush. But when a romantic connection appears where she least expected it, will she be brave enough to take a chance on love?

Anna Appleby is 38, recently divorced, and told she needs to write a more relevant column for the magazine where she works. She's competing for column space with her work enemy Will. So she decides to write about dating, but doesn't like dating apps. Instead she lets her kids pick her dates, which include the neighbor, the dad of one of the their friends at school, the delivery man, a theater actor, and their swim coach.

This was a light, easy, somewhat flawed read. It was obvious from the get-go who was going to be the HEA for Anna so that had me lightly reading her dates concocted by her kids. The reader was also privy to Anna‘s inner voice which seemed a bit redundant for the outcome we already knew was going to happen.

It was refreshing to have the protagonist of a romance novel be a late 30s divorcee with two kids, a career, and a younger love interest. Anna was incredibly real and relatable being both the mature adult and ocasional hot mess that we all are. This ended up being my favorite type of romance with the perfect blend of humor, depth, and a little bit of enemies-to-lovers.
