Joker (DC Black Label Edition)
Joker (DC Black Label Edition) | Brian Azzarello
7 posts | 25 read | 8 to read
The Joker has been mysteriously released from Arkham Asylum, and he's none too happy about what's happened to his Gotham City rackets while he's been "away." Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo bring you arguably the most terrifying Joker tale ever written! The scourge of Gotham City reaches new levels of complexity and intensity in these two uniquely crafted stories from the New York Times best-selling and Eisner Award-winning team of Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo (Batman: Damned, Luthor). He will stand over your body, with your blood on his hands, and I promise you he will laugh. Not because your life means nothing to him. But because death, for him, is the punch line. The Joker has been mysteriously released from Arkham Asylum, and he's none too happy about what's happened to his Gotham City rackets while he's been away. What follows is a harrowing night of revenge, murder and manic crime as only The Joker can deliver it, as he brutally takes back his stolen assets from the Penguin, the Riddler, Two-Face, Killer Croc and more. Collects Joker and Absolute Joker.

Generally good artwork, mediocre story = meh 😐
Joker is released from Arkham Asylum because 🤷‍♂️ and immediately goes on a standard Joker murderous rampage. Billed as giving psychological insight into his character, but it utterly fails to do so. But as I say, pretty, if gory, pictures. Just barely 3🃏

TieDyeDude Lee Bermejo is one of my favorite comic artists. I think I read this, but it obviously didn't leave much of an impression. I really liked his Christmas carol adaption, Batman Noel. 3mo
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude It appears to be on lots of "Top GN" lists, and compared to The Killing Joke, but it suffers in that comparison, I think. I wasn't aware of Bermejo before this, and his art is its saving grace. My comics obsession abated about 10 years ago due to overhyped offerings of this kind, and interminable crossovers and title proliferation of my fave characters. It was easier to stop reading altogether than only get part of the story. 3mo
TieDyeDude It is a lot. I tried reading the Tom King “City of Bane“ storyline, but it was inextricably tied to the preceding 74 issues, and not very enjoyable ultimately. @vivastory pointed out that, for DC at least, the Black Label miniseries are self-contained and generally geared more mature. If Joker is one of your favorites, though, I'll mention that I really didn't like the Three Jokers series. 3mo

Overall, I found this to be ok.
It's not a new look or theme of what makes the Joker in essence Joker and to be honest, it's not a new idea either.

Told from the perspective of a low-level thug, Johnny Frost, Brian Azzarello took me across Gotham to read this and I wasn't OMG invested or interested because it feels like I've read something similar.

Pickpick

Creepy and definitely a less comedic version of the Joker we know from TV and film. A very interesting story

Mixed reviews.... went to see it with Husband today ... so glad I did. Visually beautiful ✨Joaquin Phoenix is amazing. Really loved this ... lots of thinking to be done now ... Brilliant ♥️

alisiakae I‘m on the fence about seeing this, since I love both Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. They are hard acts to compete with! (edited) 5y
Cathythoughts @4thhouseontheleft I didn‘t see those movies .. so I can‘t compare. But I agree 2 Great actors... this movie is from a different perspective ( I think ) ... be interested to hear your thoughts if you go 👍🏻 5y
batsy I felt the same. Visually affecting and beautiful and the best thing to me is how much he conveys through movement and changing body language. Really remarkable! 5y
