The Sequel
The Sequel: A Novel | Jean Hanff Korelitz
7 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
After the insanely readable (Stephen King) and perfectly told (Malcolm Gladwell) New York Times bestseller The Plot comes Jean Hanff Korelitzs equally captivating new novel: The Sequel. Anna Williams-Bonner has taken care of business. That is to say, shes taken care of her husband, bestselling novelist Jacob Finch Bonner, and laid to rest those anonymous accusations of plagiarism that so tormented him. Now she is living the contented life of a literary widow, enjoying her husbands royalty checks in perpetuity, but for the second time in her life, a work of fiction intercedes, and this time its her own debut novel, The Afterword. After all, how hard can it really be to write a universally lauded bestseller? But when Anna publishes her book and indulges in her own literary acclaim, she begins to receive anonymous messages, taunting her with her past. That is: her real past. Someone out there knows her origins, but what do they want? And how far will they go to expose her? She has come too far, and worked too hard, to lose what she values most: the sole and uncontested right to her own story. And she is, by any standard, a master storyteller. With her signature wit and sardonic humor, Jean Hanff Korelitz gives readers an antihero to root for while illuminating and satirizing the world of publishing in this deliciously fun and suspenseful read.

This was a shockingly perfect escapist read for me over the weekend! Enjoyed it so much more than The Plot. Something about spending time with the unhinged female protagonist, perhaps...

This book is a definite extension of the first book in the best way. The same cheeky humor and peeking under the veil of the publishing/writing industry while also carrying some of the plot lines forward. It‘s bananas and I loved it.

Happily, I found this one less predictable than The Plot but also, it‘s incredibly far fetched. But there were a couple of real laugh-out-loud moments and overall, I enjoyed it!

Korelitz writes an anti-hero in a delicious way. While the idea of building a perfect life is taken to the extreme in this series, this novel reflects how many of us try to fool others into thinking we are something we are not. Between social media and our day-to-day lives, we all try to highlight our best parts. While most of us are just putting minor tweaks to our reality, Anna is taking it to a different level, making this novel quite twisty.

The Plot starts with Anna deciding to write her own novel after the death of her husband's book tour. However, this comes back to haunt her. Anna is determined to write her own happily ever after.

Anna is very snarky, is not 100% pure in her deeds and workings but you still want to root for her to win. There's information about the writing process, the publishing industry and this sequel is as good as the first book, "The Plot".

Book 196.

📖 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝑻𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒍 📖

Have you read 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐨𝐭 by 𝐉𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐟𝐟 𝐊𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐳? I devoured that fast-paced, deftly-plotted, and very clever thriller wth a shocking conclusion! So I'm delighted to be reading and discussing the follow-up, 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐥, with several fellow readers on Instagram, courtesy of Celadon Books. I'm anxious to see if the storyline is as unhinged as was 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐨𝐭! 😮
