Pulitzer Prizewinning author Anne Tyler gives us a wise, haunting, and deeply moving new novel about loss and recovery, pierced throughout with her humor, wisdom, and always penetrating look at human foibles. Crippled in his right arm and leg, Aaron grew up fending off a sister who constantly wanted to manage him. So when he meets Dorothy, an outspoken, independent young woman, shes like a breath of fresh air. He marries her without hesitation, and they have a relatively happy, unremarkable marriage. Aaron works at his familys vanity-publishing business, turning out titles that presume to guide beginners through the trials of life. But when a tree crashes into their house and Dorothy is killed, Aaron feels as though he has been erased forever. Only Dorothys unexpected appearances from the deadin their house, on the roadway, in the markethelp him to live in the moment and to find some peace. Gradually, Aaron discovers that maybe for this beginner there is indeed a way to say goodbye. Like a modern Jane Austen, Tyler creates small worlds [depicting] the intimate bonds of friendship and family.USA Today An absolute charmer of a novel . . . With sparkling prose . . . I love the way Anne Tyler writes the stories of ordinary people living unremarkable suburban lives. Here a grieving widower comes to a better understanding of himself through apparent encounters with his dead wife. Sweet and sad but ultimately hopeful.

Took a recommendation for something light amongst too much heaviness. No...nope. Not this one, it just wasn‘t for me.

Ugh. This was SOOOO boring. Seriously. That's all I can really say about this one. There was the potential for a good premise, but beyond the big event at the beginning of the novel that sets up the entire reason for the book...NOTHING HAPPENS. If this wasn't a read for my book club, I would have DNF'd this one, hands down. I was so incredibly disappointed by the exploration of the plot.

Say you'll never ever leave from beside me
'Cause I want ya, and I need ya
And I'm down for you always🎶

Aaron and Dorothy seem like a great match. But when a tree falls on their house and kills her, she appears to Aaron, by which he is simultaneously comforted but unnerved.

Nice quick read down to Edinburgh and half way back. I cannot express in words how much I love an Anne Tyler novel. I'm not really sure what it is about them that I love, all I know is that when I finish one I immediately want to start another one.

This one starts off with a ghost--not what I was expecting--but it evolved into a nuanced portrait of a marriage.

MemoirsForMe So true! This unexpected twist drew me right in....along with the family business being book publishing. Gotta love that! 8y
