Escape from St Hell | Lewis Hancox
4 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
MAN-MODE: ACTIVATED Escape from St Hell is the life-affirming sequel to the Eisner Award-nominated graphic memoir, Welcome to St Hell, by author, illustrator and filmmaker, Lewis Hancox. We re-join Lewis on his transition journey as he leaves his small Northern hometown for university, and starts picking his way through life as an adult, beset with hilarious awkwardness, plaid shirts, and a second puberty. With the guidance and wisdom from his future self, Lewis navigates what it takes to become the man he wants to be - from his first chin hair to his first bromance. This funny and honest personal story shows what it truly means to find self-acceptance (and the perfect meltdown soundtrack).

Talk about all the feels! This had me laughing, wincing, aww-ing and cheering from one panel to the next. The use of video game imagery is very effective, especially since my own daughter often talks about “leveling up“ in her life. It's lovely to see Lewis go from trying to win stereotypical “man points“ to winning points for letting himself be himself.

Pickpick

I loved Lewis Hancox's first volume of GN memoir, and this continuation is just as good, following his ongoing transition to his authentic self.
I liked the Northern idioms in the first volume, which I think are slightly toned down in this one, but it might just be that I don't notice them so much as they're familiar.

Bookwomble Lewis's anxieties, setbacks and increasing self-acceptance are shown with a touching honesty, not shrinking from difficult issues while retaining an inspirational humour 5⭐🏳️‍⚧️ 5mo

I picked up a stack of graphic novels from Leyland library. It has the best selection of GNs of the three libraries I frequent. Excellent librarianing! ✊
I'm starting with The Witcher Omnibus, Them Escape from St. Hell, then whatever piques interest next.

Pickpick

As a fan of Welcome to St. Hell, I was thrilled to find out a sequel dropped! This installment of Lewis Hancox‘s graphic memoir sees him starting hormone therapy, leaving home, starting college, dating as a trans man, and, above all, learning that being a man doesn‘t mean putting on a winning persona, but being himself. It was a bit tedious watching Lew frequently make the same mistakes, but it made him finding his way all the more satisfying.
