All's Fair in Love and War
All's Fair in Love and War: A Novel | Virginia Heath
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
In the first installment of a Regency romp of a series, a governess who believes in cultivating joy in her charges clashes with the childrens uncle who hired her, only to find herself falling in love. When Harry Kincaids flighty older sister decides to join her husband on an Egyptian expedition, Harry, a former naval captain, is left in the lurch, minding her three unruly children and giant, mad dog. But Harry has a busy career at the Admiralty that requires all his attention, and he has no clue how to manage the little rascals or when his sister is coming back. In desperation, he goes to Miss Prentices School for Young Ladies prepared to pay whatever it takes to hire an emergency governess quick sharp to ensure everything in his formerly ordered house is run shipshape again. Thanks to her miserable, strict upbringing, fledgling governess Georgie Rowe does not subscribe to the ethos that children should be seen and not heard. She believes childhood should be everything hers wasntfilled with laughter, adventure, and discovery. Thankfully, the three Pendleton children she has been tasked with looking after are already delightfully bohemian and instantly embrace her unconventional educational approach. Their staid, stickler-for-the-rules uncle, however, is another matter entirely. Georgie and Harry continue to butt heads over their differences, but with time it seems that in this case, their attraction is undeniableand all is indeed fair in love and war.

I loved this sweet story and its lovable characters.
Georgie Rowe is an outspoken and opinionated young governess who believes that children should enjoy a childhood that is everything hers was not…namely filled with fun, laughter and adventure. Her first long-overdue posting (see outspoken and opinionated…) is to the household of former naval captain Harry Kincaid whose flighty sister leaves her three children with him for an extended stay ⬇️

robinb before leaving for Egypt. Harry, as an organized and meticulous perfectionist, is ambitious and aiming for the title of Admiral while working all hours of the day in the process. Obviously, Georgie and Harry‘s styles clash. But as they begin to appreciate certain aspects of the other‘s ways, and as Harry‘s star begins rising and he is offered his own ship (the largest and newest in the fleet), he must decide if a naval career ⬇️ 2w
robinb taking him offshore for extended periods is really what he wants when a part of his heart (namely Georgie) is left onshore.
Very well written and Harry and Georgie are just such wonderful characters, both separately and as a couple. Throw in three mischievous, unruly children, and you‘ve got the recipe for hijinks and heartwarming.
Happy to see that this is the start of a new series as I will ⬇️

robinb definitely be checking into the future stories of Georgie‘s governess friends.

CatLass007 Sounds like fun! It kinda, sorta reminds me of The Sound of Music. Unruly children, outspoken governess, (former) military officer. 2w
robinb @CatLass007 Hmmm. Good point, I hadn‘t thought of that! But alas, not a musical. 😂 2w
