A New Lease on Death
A New Lease on Death | Olivia Blacke
10 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
In this darkly funny supernatural mystery about an unlikely crime-solving duo that launches a commercial, unique, and genre-blending series, death is only the beginning. Ruby Young's new Boston apartment comes with all the usual perks. Windows facing the brick wall of the next-door building. Heat that barely works. A malfunctioning buzzer. Noisy neighbors. A dead body on the sidewalk outside. And of course, a ghost. Since Cordelia Graves died in her apartment a few months ago, she's kept up her residency, despite being bored out of her (non-tangible) skull and frustrated by her new roommate. When her across-the-hall neighbor, Jake Macintyre, is shot and killed in an apparent mugging gone wrong outside their building, Cordelia is convinced theres more to it and is determined to bring his killer to justice. Unfortunately, Cordelia, being dead herself, can't solve the mystery alone. She has to enlist the help of the obnoxiously perky, living tenant of her apartment. Ruby is twenty, annoying, and has never met a houseplant she couldn't kill. But she also can do everything Cordelia can't, from interviewing suspects to researching Jake on the library computers that go up in a puff of smoke if Cordelia gets too close. The roommates form an unlikely friendship as they get closer to the truth about Jake's death...and maybe other dangerous secrets as well.

This is the first book in a new series that features Ruby, a young woman, & Cordelia, a 40 something woman who is a ghost and used to live in Ruby's apartment. I enjoyed it as it was a decent mystery about the death of a neighbour and had nice humor and quirky characters. The ending sets us up for the next book, which I look forward to reading. My only beef was why does Cordelia not print using pen & paper? Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. 4/5 !

Mehso-so

This was a good book to check out from the library. Will I re-read it? No. Am I invested enough for a second book? Yeah, if I need something to read. It landed for me between “Meh” and “A Pick”, so if that helps your decision process. Word of warning: do not start a drinking game of taking a shot every time you read, “We need a real way to communicate better”, you will be drunk very early on because it is said a lot 😆😵‍💫🥴

A great #SpookySeason read! This mystery, told through two perspectives— the ghost of a woman in her forties & the twenty year old who takes over the lease on the furnished apartment— makes for a fun read! Cordelia & Ruby work together to solve the murder of the guy living across the hallway in “their”Boston apartment building. With struggles to communicate & plenty of lingering questions, this feels fresh & leaves you eager for the sequel!

I‘m currently reading this Netgalley ARC coming out October 29. I wasn‘t sure what to think about this book at first but it‘s fun. It has a ghost and a human trying to solve a murder mystery together. Since my dog passed away on Friday morning, I feel like this is what I want to read right now since I‘m feeling like I just want to read fun books right now.

I was invited to read the tagged book but I‘m going to wait until Sept to read it because I need a break from reading ARCs for a while. I haven‘t read the Finlay Donavan or Charley Davidson series. Charley Davidson makes me think of the motorcycle brand Harley Davidson. I wonder if there‘s motorcycles in that series. One day at the dog park, I actually saw and heard 2 guys riding motorcycles in my neighborhood. It was cool to see that.
