panFalco was insufferable, especially in the beginning & his interactions with Sosia were disgusting. Real “written by a man” energy.
I enjoyed the delve into the Roman Empire & Britain altho some of the names felt very Mel Brooks/Monty Python.
Helena was a delight & I have to root for the woman who doesn‘t take any man‘s shit.
My feelings about Falco mellowed by the end. I understood him better but I still didn‘t care for him.

I do have a back up if I don't get on with either, which I forgot to put on here - The Thieves of Ostia by Caroline Lawrence. It was one of my favourite series when I was younger, so it'd be interesting to revisit as an adult!

They're gumshoe P.I. mysteries set in Vespasian's Rome. I'm told the historical accuracy is pretty good, but mostly I care that they're just good stories. I'm still pretty early in the series, so looking forward to the rest.

Next is a series I devoured when I was younger which is why Marcus Didius Falco finds himself on my #Top20Series list. I loved this series along with Steven Saylor‘s Roma Sub Rosa series starring Gordianus the Finder. Great characters, wonderful setting (who doesn‘t want to imagine themselves walking the streets of Ancient Rome solving mysteries?!?), & always entertaining mysteries. Both are really fun series.

In my quest to maximize all possible joy from travels, I start reading as many fiction books as I can set in the locale I plan on visiting. For my upcoming Rome trip this summer, I discovered a historical mystery series set in Ancient Rome! It‘s a fun book so far.
