A divorcee embarks on her year of yes and crosses paths with a shy but sensitive birdwatcher who changes her life in this charming rom-com that is perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and Ali Hazelwood. Newly-divorced, almost-empty-nester Celeste is finally seeking adventure and putting herself first, cliches be damned. So when a friend asks Celeste to partner with his buddy John for an event, Celeste throws herself into the role of his temporary girlfriend. But quiet cinnamon roll John isnt looking for love, just birdshe needs a partner for Tucsons biggest bird-watching contest if hes ever going to launch his own guiding business. By the time they untangle their crossed signals, theyve become teammatesand thanks to his meddling friends, a fake couple. Celeste cant tell a sparrow from a swallow, but John is a great teacher, and the hours they spend hiking in the Arizona wilderness feed Celestes hunger for new adventures while giving John a chance to practice his dream job. As the two spend more time together, they end up watching more than just the birds, and their chemistry becomes undeniable. Since theyre both committed to the single life, Celeste suggests a status upgrade: birders with benefits, just until the contest is done. But as the bird count goes up and their time together ticks down, John and Celeste will have to decide if their benefits can last a lifetime, or if this love affair is for the birds.

This morning Sneaky Casey stole a pillow and hid behind BIRDING WITH BENEFITS, which is a lot of fun so far. I love it when something that‘s marketed as a romcom is actually full of jokes and wacky hijinks! (Publishers do seem to be getting better about this.) I‘m excited to read more later this afternoon. Hopefully I can finish it tomorrow so the next person on the holds list gets a go.

xicanti @peanutnine birding for everyone! One of my friends recently became obsessed with some eagles that keep hanging out in her tree, to the point where she‘s always got her binoculars and her camera close by, and I‘m all, “You didn‘t even read the birding books!” 2w

This week‘s small library haul, plus a guide to the Châteaux of the Loire I found at the thrift store. BIRDING WITH BENEFITS is the last #AuldLangSpine title I‘ll be able to source before month‘s end, but I probably won‘t get to it until early February. HEAVENLY TYRANT is a long-awaited sequel, while the other two were impulse grabs off the shelf. I‘ve wanted to reread ORANGE for ages now, and I‘m excited to read more plays this year.

Meh, when does friends with benefits not lead to at least one person or both wanting more? I liked the premise of making it about birding- it almost sounds fun. The last third of the book is nothing but smut, but thankfully it‘s not degrading so it wasn‘t too cringe. Book #72 in 2024

The bird-watching setup for this fake dating t trope was really cute. But don‘t let his innocent looking cover fool you because surely those fogged up binoculars were ineffective to sight 150+ birds. …It‘s become fact, that if I‘m pushing a sleeping grandchild through a crowded park and listening to an audiobook, I will have forgotten earbuds, and the book will be steamy🤭🤭

julesG Happy meals used to have some cool stuff. Nowadays it's broken before you've made it home. That said, my kids loved it when there were books in the HM - not sure whether that was an international thing or just in Germany. 8mo
marleed @julesG There are piles of fun toys in those buckets. My saving them makes for funny memories now because more than once kids went home crying convinced we stole their old HM toy (mom threw their‘s away)😂 One kid said to me once ‘I see you spend a lot of time at McDonald‘s‘. We still know him - and the line is part of our vernacular! 8mo

Here is a romance for all my fellow outdoorsy girls! You‘ve got the unique birding angle (which I loved), a cinnamon roll in the form of John, fake dating, and spicy fun times. Plus, as a middle aged reader, seeing someone close to my own age was fabulous!! This book will be the perfect addition to your summer reading list. Bring your binoculars and fly away with this fun romance.
