"An unputdownable and gripping thriller with nonstop twists and turns!" --Freida McFadden, New York Times bestselling author of The Housemaid The next riveting summer suspense by the bestselling author of THE BLOCK PARTY, Jamie Day. Could this reunion be the death of them? The Precipice is a legendary, family-owned hotel on the rocky coast of Maine. With the recent passing of their father, the Bishop sisters--Iris, Vicki, and Faith--have come for the weekend to claim it. But with a hurricane looming and each of the Bishop sisters harboring dangerous secrets, there's murder in the air-- and not everyone who checks into the Precipice will be checking out. Each sister wants what is rightfully hers, and in the mix is the Precipe's nineteen-year-old chambermaid Charley Kelley: smart, resilient, older than her years, and in desperate straits. The arrival of the Bishop sisters could spell disaster for Charley. Will they close the hotel? Fire her? Discover her habit of pilfering from guests? Or even worse, learn that she's using a guest room to hide a woman on the run. With razor-sharp wit, heart, thrills, and twists, Jamie Day's ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY delivers a unique brand of summertime suspense.

Set in a family-owned hotel on the coast of Maine, it‘s filled with drama, secrets, and a hurricane to boot. The Bishop sisters—Vicki, Iris, and Faith—come together after their father‘s death, and things quickly spiral into a mess of old grudges and murder.

I have to say, the ending was a little over-the-top, but that didn‘t ruin the experience for me. If you‘re into family drama and some twisty thriller vibes, this one‘s worth picking up.

I did find the novel rather predictable and many of the twists bordered on the absurd. For a majority of the narrative I was hooked, but there were other parts that seemed to drag, taking me out of the story. I did enjoy Maarleveld‘s narration of the story. Each character was given their own unique voice and individual personality. I did have to speed up the pace a little, but once I did that the pacing and inflection were, in my opinion, spot on.

This is a thriller about a dysfunctional family, set in a rural oceanside hotel during a hurricane. While I found it entertaining enough while reading it (although a bit unbelievable at times), it is not something I will remember a year from now. That being said, sometimes that is all you want from a book and it is still a decent vacation read. My favorite part was the atmospheric setting. Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the digital ARC. 3.25 stars

Meh. At least it filled a book bingo square. 😜 [Full review to come . . . hopefully.]

A reading of their father‘s will at the Bishop family‘s luxurious hotel brings everyone together.

They really do not like each other and have secrets.

Most likely it will be a stormy reading along with the hurricane that is predicted to arrive in a few days.

How will it all turn out? Or should we say: Who will win out - the storm, the siblings, or neither one?

I wanted to like this more than I did as I had read a previous book from this author that I really enjoyed.
This is a murder mystery that takes place during a hurricane at an inn (locked-location) featuring a gathering of the deceased owner‘s daughters for the reading of his will. Our heroine is a young housekeeper who lives at the inn and is trying desperately to provide both for herself and her grandmother who has health issues. There‘s the🔻

robinb usual greed, jealousy and sordid secrets (which I guessed fairly early on). My big issue here was the storyline/plot. I simply didn‘t care enough about the story/characters and found myself contemplating not finishing at times. There were things thrown in (I suppose as possible red herrings?) that felt sloppy and spur-of-the-moment, and the entire middle of the book just went off the rails for me. There were inane conversations that took place🔻 5mo
robinb between characters WHILE IN THE HOUSE WITH A MURDERER that were laughable and cringe-worthy.

This one just didn‘t hit right for me, but I‘ll hope for better from Day in the future. 2.5/5⭐️

Ms. Day had shown in her first novel The Block Party that she can take on a dysfunctional family and all their drama and she has turned that up a notch or two in One Big Happy Family.

A little slow at first, and I lost interest when the book gave background information on the characters, but the current-day storyline is intense and good. 4/5

The Bishop sisters, Iris, Vicki and Faith have come to the coast of Maine because their father has passed away and they need to claim their inheritance, the Precipice, a family-owned hotel. With a hurricane coming and secrets of the sisters, there is murder in the air and everyone checking in the Precipice won't be checking out.

EadieB Precipice's 19 year old chambermaid, Charley Kelley is in the mix and in desperate straits. The arrival of the Bishop sisters could change things. Will they close the hotel? Fire her? Discover her habit of pilfering from the guests? Or using a guest room to hide a woman on the run. This is a long, drawn-out story that could have been shorter. It kind of got twisted and turned around a bit too much. 6mo
EadieB It had potential to be a great story but got a bit convoluted. If you like twisted, convoluted stories, then you will love this book. But I personally didn't like it too much! 6mo
