The Phoenix Keeper
The Phoenix Keeper: A Heartwarming Laugh-Out-loud Cozy Fantasy Romance Debut and Uplifting Ode to Queer Joy | S. A. MACLEAN
10 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
As head phoenix keeper at a world-renowned zoo for magical creatures, Aila's childhood dream of conserving critically endangered firebirds seems closer than ever. There's just one glaring caveat: her zoo's breeding program hasn't functioned for a decade. When a tragic phoenix heist sabotages the flagship initiative at a neighbouring zoo, Aila must prove her derelict facilities are fit to take the reins. But saving an entire species from extinction requires more than stellar animal handling skills. Carnivorous water horses, tempestuous thunderhawks, mischievous dragons... Aila has no problem wrangling beasts. Inspiring zoo patrons? That's another story. Mustering the courage to ask for help from the hotshot griffin keeper at the zoo's most popular exhibit? Virtually impossible. Especially when that hotshot griffin keeper happens to be her arch-rival from college: Luciana, an annoyingly brooding and insufferable know-it-all with the grace of a basilisk and the face of a goddess who's convinced that Aila's beloved phoenix would serve their cause better as an active performer rather than as a passive conservation exhibit. With the world watching and the threat of poachers looming, Aila's success is no longer merely a matter of keeping her job... She is the keeper of the phoenix, and the future of a species now rests on her shoulders. There's just one thing she has to remember: she is also not alone. Against an epic fantasy backdrop teeming with all your favourite mythical beasts from dragons and unicorns to kelpies and krakens, The Phoenix Keeper combines the fierce joy of cozy fantasy kings TJ Klune and Travis Baldree with the soul-restoring romance of queer icons Alice Oseman and Casey McQuiston.

This is a lovely cozy, all about finding the courage to be your true self, out loud. The MC is anxious to the point of reclusiveness, and watching her inch out of her shell is rewarding. I also loved that a number of the supporting characters are magical animals, with robust personalities of their own. Throw in a sweet, tentative, enemies to lovers, and I‘m sold.

Which fantasy is my next read — cozy, high, or spooky…I can‘t decide…

My #HauntedHollowSwap #Halloween aesthetics! As you can see, I absolutely love autumn 🍂. I‘m also a fan of Dark Academia and Mythology. Starting last year, I‘m also a fan of #StephenKing (It, Pet Sematary, Salem‘s Lot…) so I do love some horror once in a while.

I was really excited by a cozy fantasy set at a zoo and about conservation of magical creatures. I enjoyed a lot of the descriptions of the zoo and of the phoenixes, but this didn't pull me into the world as much as some other cozy fantasies I've read. It was a very slow read, and I felt like the romance took way too long to develop. I was also frustrated by how long it took Aila to realize things that were quickly obvious as a reader.

The new Illumicrate book is absolutely gorgeous! And I've been really excited to read this one too! From what I've heard about it, it's supposedly a sapphic romantic fantasy! 💕📚 #illumicrate

A cozy fantasy enemies to lovers story set in a magical zoo. Head phoenix keeper Aila understands animals. People, not so much. But when she is granted the chance to start a breeding program for a highly endangered species of phoenix, she realizes she can't do it all on her own.

sebrittainclark I didn't realize this one was cozy fantasy, now I'm even more excited to read it. 4mo
