When a new pen reminds you of an old favorite...
Book mail! I mentioned that I'm trying to work through the Mythopoetic winners this July, and a dear friend recommended this one - I think we're going to read it together! #bookmail #readwomen
#Walkingonthemoon (minus an l and the on). A starting college freshman girl named Sweeney befriends Angelica and falls in love with a boy named Oliver. She gets tangled up with a female cult that wakes a malevolent goddess. Years later when she meets Angela's son will she discover what destiny was meant for her. This one was a lot of things. Scary, suspenseful, a love story, fantasy. Definitely worth a read.
This is an atmospheric fever dream about goddess worship, ancient rituals, and the eternal power struggle between men and women; a slow roll scented with sandalwood, orange, honey wine, Mediterranean Sea breeze and hyacinths. The love child of Mary Renault and Donna Tartt, this is not for the impatient reader, or those needing easy resolution. It unfolds and enfolds, pulling you in. And if you do not fall in love with Oliver, you have no soul.
Described as a "post-feminist thriller" this book has magic, myth, and one of the best descriptions I've ever read of what it feels like to start college away from home. Unfortunately, I happened to find a blog post on the interwebs that characterizes this as "boring horror." I know that shouldn't stop me from enjoying it (I am) but I feel just a little silly for liking it, now. Oddly, that never happens to me with Litsy even when we disagree.
This is a tale of 3 college friends who unwittingly stand between The Benandanti, a magical society, and the awakening of a goddess. Full of weird arcane magical lore, this is a novel of coming of age, horror and romance. The story is fascinating, and there are no easy answers as to who the villains are. Also a great look at campus life. If you think this sounds too much like Secret History, I assure you this is not true. #FunFridayPhoto
