7 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
What if you could take a vacation from your marriage? A couple decides to give it a shot in this fun, adventurous novel by Lian Dolan, the popular author of The Sweeney Sisters and Lost and Found in Paris. After twenty-three years of building careers and raising kids together, Jason and Nicole Elswick are ready for a break from their daily lives. Jason has spent years planning his dream sabbaticalditching work for a nine-month-long motorcycle trip through South America. Problem is, thats Jasons dream, not Nicoles. After years working retail and parenting in Portland, Nicole craves the sun of the Southwest and the artistic community in Santa Fe, where she wants to learn jewelry design. A chance encounter at a dinner party presents a surprisingand intriguingway out of their dilemma. Over a little too much wine, Jason and Nicoles married neighbors sing the praises of the 500 Mile Rule: their policy of enjoying themselves however they wishand with whomever they wishwhen theyre temporarily far apart. It seems like the perfect solution: nine months pursuing their own adventureswith a bit of dont-ask-dont-telland then a return to their shared lives. Itll be a sabbatical from their marriage as well as their day jobs. As Jason bikes his way across a continent and Nicole reclaims the art shes long neglected, they discover the pleasures and pitfalls of the 500 Mile Rule, confronting temptations of all kinds, uncomfortable truths about themselves, and gaining new perspective on their partnership. But all sabbaticals come to an endthen what?

When I read the blurb on this book I was intrigued. Who wouldn‘t be? With the flashbacks on how they got started, and how it was going to, and to present day to white experiment, I could not stop reading! I binge read the second half! With Santa Fe and New Mexico adventures, and all of the people that they met during the sabbatical, it was easy to get involved in their lives. Will they go through with it? How will it end?

I brought a huge stack with me for a long weekend in Jersey 🤣 I finished Taste tonight, and I‘m partway through the tagged book, plus Beyond the Wand. I gave a few good options, plus three ARCs I need to read in the next two weeks 🤣 #booknerdproblems

I enjoyed this, though I was a bit worried where it was headed for awhile. A married couple (20+ years) is dealing with life changes and an empty nest and decides to take solo trips for 9 months, agreeing to enjoy and experience life however it comes, including possible other relationships. I loved the settings of Portland, Sante Fe, & Patagonia, & the thoughtful way they supported each other as they reimagined their lives. So good! Releases 4/1.

What a fresh take on a modern marriage! I love the topics this book delves into: polyamorous relationships, raising kids, work/life balance and following our passions. This novel takes a look at all of these ideas without turning it into a messy drama, just lots of self-discovery and personal growth. If you are looking for a book club read, this may be one to consider as there is a lot to dig into and discuss.
