Tom King is undefeated at writing 12-issue miniseries about DC most obscure characters. This one literally started as a joke on Twitter. King's homage to his favorite noir, 1949's D.O.A., is a love story wrapped in a murder mystery. Greg Smallwood's art elevates this story to true beauty.

Might be brightly coloured, but it's definitely a noir detective story under the stylish veneer. Loved the plot development, the characters, the art, even the ending. Sincerely hope I can find more graphic novels like it, where I get introduced to 'heroes' I don't know as well, from a compelling outsider POV.

IloveitIoveIloveit! Got this whole swinging sixties detective story vibe (the art 😍, the narrative style!). It contains a lot of super powered people but you're not seeing them in quite the same light as mainstream comics. The colour palette makes it hard to think of it as noir, but a slightly dimmer view of human/superhero behaviour is on offer. So glad my library has the second volume so I can keep reading, solve the mystery!

Tom King took the plot of the 1949 film noir D.O.A.--a poisoned man has to solve his own murder before his inevitable death--and applied it to Christopher Chance a.k.a. the Human Target. Each issue revolves around a different suspect from the Justice League International. To complicate things further, Chance finds himself in a fling with femme fatale Ice, one of the suspects. Smallwood's art perfectly channels the '60s vibe.
