A novel filled with depth, wit, heart, and a bit of intrigue, from the author who has captivated readers and reviewers alike with her modern yet timeless (Kirkus Reviews) storytelling, complex characters, relatable friendships, and emotionally rich romance. Hairstylist Jess Greene has spent the last decade raising her younger half-sister, Teganand keeping a shocking secret. Ever since their reckless mother ran off with a boyfriend shed known only a few months, Jess has been aware that hes the same accomplished con man who was the subject of a wildly popular podcast, The Last Con of Lynton Baltimore. Now thirty-one, Jess didnt bargain on Tegan eventually piecing together the connection for herself. But Tegan plans to do exactly what Jess has always fearedleave their safe, stable home to search for their motherand shell be accompanied by the prying podcast host and her watchful, handsome producer, Adam Hawkins. Unwilling to let the sister shes spent so much of her life protecting go it alone, Jess reluctantly joins them. Together, the four make their way across the country, unraveling the mystery of where the couple disappeared to and why. But soon Jess is discovering other things too. Like a renewed sense of vulnerability and curiosity, and a willingness to expand beyond the walls shes so carefully built. And in Adam, she finds an unexpected connection she didnt even know was missing, if only she can let go and let him in . . . Poignant, observant, tender, and deeply romantic, The Other Side of Disappearing is a genre-bending triumph. Clayborn takes what she does best and goes deeper, deftly braiding mystery and family drama with an absorbing romance in her trademark lyrical voice. This book is everything; Jess and Adam own my whole heart. Christina Lauren, New York Times bestselling authors of The True Love Experiment Another masterclass in romance. . . . I never disappear into a book the way I do into Clayborns. Alicia Thompson, bestselling author of Love in the Time of Serial Killers

Three bingos in June! It was a great reading month for me, but I imagine I'll do less in July since my maternity leave is ending.

4/5

Ten years ago, Jess Greene's mother ran off with the subject of a popular true crime podcast and left Jess to raise her little sister. Now, the host of the podcast, and her intern Adam have come into their lives to try to find Jess's mother and wrap up the story that began a decade ago.

I really enjoyed the true crime aspect of the book, as well as Jess's journey to better understanding herself as she reluctantly goes to find her mother.

I loved Georgie, All Along (also by Kate Clayborn) and I had read that this book would give me Sadie (Courtney Summers) vibes but despite all that it just felt flat to me. Super bummed.

I had zero expectations going into this audiobook, but found myself really enjoying it. The audio format worked really well with the narrative: alternating narrators for the dual POV and podcast excerpt sections. The romance was a bit rushed, but the tension and relationship still worked for me. The true crime Serial-esque podcast plot & coinciding road trip investigation was interesting to follow along with.

While there was a nice bit of romance in this book, it was had more depth than many books of that genre. It is the story of a woman who at 21 was left to care for her 8 year old sister when their mom abandoned them. Now, ten years later, the younger sister wants to find their mom with the help of a podcaster. It deals with sacrifice, abandonment, siblings, parenting, romance and learning to live for yourself again. I really enjoyed it. 4/5 !

I‘m a big Clayborn fan from her beginning. But while I did enjoy this book, it was not a favorite for me. And to be honest I‘m not sure why. This revolves around two sisters who were abandoned by their flighty mom (who took up with a grifter). The older sister Jess raised Tegan, her half sister. Now Tegan wants to find their mother and enlists the aid of a podcaster who interviewed the man 10 years before. Thus begins a cross-country adventure 🔻

robinb with the sisters, Salem (the podcaster) and Adam (her assistant). Adam also has a personal story that he‘d like to produce (with Salem‘s approval) about his best friend‘s mental struggles and subsequent suicide. While this was a good story about what family means, what courage means and what strength means, I just didn‘t connect with these characters as well as I wanted to. But still, a good book. 4/5⭐️ 8mo

Bailedbailed

2024 is going to be my year of DNFing books that just aren't resonating with me.
I've enjoyed other books by Clayborn but I've had this on my bedside and in my backpack since August and I still haven't finished. Cleary, this one just isn't for me. Maybe I'll try it in audio next year but for now, it's time we part ways.

everlocalwest Note: if anyone would like my ARC, let me know, I'll happily send it your way. 11mo
Pip2 I‘ve been doing the same thing. If a book doesn‘t sell me after 50 pages or 12.5%, whichever is longer. I bail. 11mo
everlocalwest @Pip2 oh, I like this system! I need to find one that works for me. I never bail on books but I'm trying to make it a priority in the new year. 11mo

What happens when the mystery you‘ve been hiding from all your life shows back up on your doorstep via podcasters bent on finding the truth? A truth you‘d rather not face? Kate Clayborn writes the most authentic characters and imbues them with heart and purpose. She puts them through the wringer, but I enjoyed every minute! Highly recommend, releases March 26.
