“After the year of fire
vines rise up
through the rest of our lives
of smoke
of flame
of memory.
As if to say
We're still here.
As if to say
Remember us.”

What is it about Woodson that fully pulls you in, restarts your heart, makes you savor each phrase — whatever it is, it‘s magic. Story is based on Bushwick neighborhood in NYC, called “Matchbox” due to the constant house fires that happened there…

"You ever miss something that is right there in front of you?"

This is one of Woodson's books that progresses from feeling a bit too juvenile to hitting just the right tone. I absolutely love her writing and will devour everything she puts out.

Gorgeously written and a bit of Bushwick history I was not familiar with, made this a wonderful little read.

"Before it was Bushwick, it was the land of the Lenape, who lived among the trees and didn't need a bear coming on the TV screen on a Sunday night to remind them about the dangers of fire. They understand smoke and flame and the power of the woods "

❤️ I just love melting into Woodson's writing

This is another sweet read from Jacqueline Woodson. It's also empowering for black girls and boys. The story is set in Bushwick in the 1970s. Even though I no longer teach middle school, I still wanted to read this book because I love the author.
