The River Runs South
The River Runs South: A Novel | Audrey Ingram
4 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
For fans of Kristy Woodson Harvey and Linda Holmes, The River Runs South is a transporting and illuminating novel that will resonate with readers who have ever felt a little bit lost. Exploring love, loss, and the courage of starting over fresh, this novel will appeal to readers on the hunt for emotionally rich fiction. When Camille Taylors husband dies unexpectedly, the carefully constructed life she worked so hard to build in Washington D.C. shatters. Her grief interferes with her demanding legal career, and her normally gregarious young daughter is heartbroken. After struggling for almost a year, she reaches a breaking point and finally packs up her small family and heads for the Alabama coast where she grew up. The salt air and slow rhythms of the coast soothe Camilles spirit but when she meets local fisherman Mack Phillips, she learns that not everything is the same as when she was last home. Runoff from an abandoned development site is polluting the water, and Mack has brought a suit against the sites owners Camilles father among them. Battling her own fears for the fragile ecosystem of her beloved Mobile Bay, Camille joins her fathers defense team, but the more she learns, the more she wonders if shes landed on the right side of the fight. Mack is passionate about not only his livelihood as a fisherman but about the future of the coast itself. Little by little, Camille is drawn to his fearless resolve, his sterling ideals, and finally to the man himself. Wondering if its too soon to begin a new relationship and trying to weather her familys outraged reaction to it, Camille must suddenly navigate the blurry lines between right and wrong and decide for herself what the next chapter of her life will bring.

The River Runs South is a moving, passionate story of love, loss, grief, healing, and moving forward. The characters were genuine and realistic.

This quick and emotional read centers around Camille and her precocious daughter, Willa. Sudden tragedy brings them to live temporarily with Camille‘s parents in her hometown in Southern Alabama. As Camille recovers from recent events, she‘s drawn to the changes made in the years since she last lived there. It‘s sad, but hopeful—making for a great summer read as the season gets to ready to change. Likable characters & an interesting side plot!
